The Return of Roger Ebert’s Voice on Oprah
In case you missed it, here’s the clip from Oprah yesterday where Roger Ebert debuted his new digitized voice for the first time. For the full back story, read the awesome article in Esquire about Ebert’s multiple surgeries and his current state of living. The voice was culled from a couple of his DVD commentary tracks, and although it’s still choppy and uneven, you can definitely hear a familiar tone in there somewhere.
Incidentally, Ebert also announced his 2010 Oscar predictions, which pretty much fell in line with the Vegas odds. Do you agree with his picks?

I have a two part question: Will the Ebert voice box be made available to the public and how much will it cost?
Posted by Nate on March 3rd, 2010Ebert sortof freaks me out though, he reminds me of the guy from Dream Deceivers.
But his twitter is awesome, and he’s still a great writer.
Posted by Henrik on March 3rd, 2010Damn I loved watching Evert and Siskel as a kid and now to see him like this is a damn tragedy! It seems crazy that both of these guys had cancer with Siskel loosing his life to his condition. I hate cancer and what it does to people but I am also quite familiar with the treatments which can sometimes end up killing faster than the cancer itself.
As a person who has lived with it I feel for the guy and as a fan of films and Ebert I feel sorry for him and his condition because he has lost the ability to critically voice his opinion like he did on “At the Movies” with Siskel like he did all those years ago. But at least he can write and he seems really strong in the face of what he is going through. Long live Ebert!

Posted by Napalm on March 3rd, 2010That’s not as weird as I thought it would be. I could see people getting used to that. It’s way better than Steven Hawkings’ voice. Although, visually, Ebert is still hard to look at. No offense.
Posted by rjdelight on March 3rd, 2010I had no idea that Ebert’s face had become so disfigured. Poor thing. It made me really sad to see him like that.
Posted by Less Lee Moore on March 3rd, 2010I 100% agree with Ebert’s Oscar predictions – believe it or not – I made the exact same list a couple of days ago.
and yes: Long live Ebert!
Posted by Werner on March 3rd, 2010Damn, and I thought he looked terrible like a year ago!
Posted by Niklas on March 3rd, 2010I can see now why he hasn’t made any public appearances. I wouldn’t, either.
Posted by Deven Science on March 3rd, 2010Got to give it to the man for not throwing in the towel and keep fighting this horrible illness.
Posted by swarez on March 4th, 2010One wonders though if he will shell out for a new fake jaw to sproose up his looks.
