Sean Bean and Luke Goss to Star in Death Race 2

By now we all know that poor reviews and even mediocre box office results won’t necessarily stop a sequel from getting greenlit, particularly if said sequel can be produced on the cheap. Last year it was announced that a prequel to Paul W.S. Anderson’s Death Race remake was in the works, and at the time I wondered how it could be anything but a DTV release. This week we have confirmation that Death Race 2 is indeed going direct-to-DVD, although that hasn’t prevented Universal from recruiting some recognizable names to star in it.
According to Heat Vision, Sean Bean and Luke Goss have signed on to headline the film, with Goss playing the original Frankenstein, a convicted cop killer who becomes a reality TV hero. Lauren Cohan, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, and Frederick Koehler will also star, with Koehler apparently being the only returning cast member from Anderson’s previous film. Roel Reiné (The Marine 2) will direct.
Most of the stars are people who I would expect to see in a direct-to-DVD release, but I didn’t realize that Sean Bean’s career had come to this. (Then again, I suppose his last few major movies have been Silent Hill, The Hitcher and Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.) Part of me thinks that a cheap-ass prequel could actually be better than the original, which quite frankly, needed to be a lot cheesier in order to be fun. Universal will release it under their DVD Originals banner, the same series that recently brought us Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball. Will you check this out when it hits store shelves?

I think you already know my answer to that question.
Posted by Wintle on March 2nd, 2010Wintle, what did you think of the first one? (The first Paul W.S. Anderson one, I mean.)
Posted by Sean on March 2nd, 2010The first Death Race was horrible, but was fun enough to sit through. A straight to DVD prequel may actually be better for the reasons mentioned in the article. I’ll definitely check it out when it is released, especially since I’m a sucker for sequels both theatrically and especially straight to DVD.
Posted by Jonathan Sullivan on March 2nd, 2010I’ve always been a huge fan of Anderson’s movies; and an even bigger fan of Twisted Metal games.I enjoyed the first one. It was better than the original 1970’s version. I’m down for checkin out the next one…even if it’s gone straight ta dvd.
