Scream of the Bikini Trailer: Another Retro Spoof

screambikini

With Black Dynamite hitting stores today, here’s a heads up on a potential distant cousin, just in case you’re in need of a second movie for a double bill. Scream of the Bikini is a similar parody of cult cinema, also trying to pass itself off as the genuine article, but instead of tackling ’70s blaxploitation it pays tribute to ’60s spy movies. It claims to be a poorly dubbed, long lost film from acclaimed South American director Fernando Fernandez, but it’s actually the directorial debut of a guy named Kiff Scholl.

I haven’t heard anything else about the movie, but apparently it played in some festivals and will get a limited theatrical run in Los Angeles this weekend. To be honest, the trailer looks a bit iffy, and nowhere near as good as Black Dynamite although I’d still be willing to give it a chance. It’s a bit of a reminder that these kinds of parodies are not necessarily as easy to pull off as they might seem. For every Black Dynamite out there, there’s also a Lost Skeleton of Cadavra to go with it. Check out the trailer for Scream of the Bikini after the jump and see what you think. 1. As much as I enjoyed Black Dynamite, these types of films aren’t really necessary. There’s such a backlog of great 60s-70s films that you may as well watch the movies being spoofed as they’re generally better and often more unintentionally funny than these films are funny. I’ve been trying to catch up on genre cinema from that era since I was in 10th grade and still to this day I’m discovering amazing forgotten stuff that somehow slipped through the cracks.

If you ARE gonna spoof movies of this period you’ve got to do a hell of a lot better than this thing appears to. Go watch Danger: Diabolik again and skip this P.O.S.

  2. Yeah this looks like complete shit.

  3. I have actually seen this film. These guys do a great job having fun with the genre. It is full of wonderful moments, great characters, and special details that you miss on first viewing. Extremely funny without constantly commenting on itself. It is stylistic, which many smaller films never get. It throws in references from obscure 60’s films. If you know those films it is a pleasure to discover.

  4. @Freddie

Reeeeeeaaaallllyyy…. So you’re saying I may need to prepare to eat my words, eh? :)

  5. well Fatbologna…one persons POS is another’s treat. Fortunately we all have different taste or the world would be bland as hell. cheers.

  6. JeanASS, nice.

  7. First and foremost, the fact that Scream of the Bikini is being compared to an obviously bigger budgeted film must, and will be, a great honor for them! I being a film maker myself. Second, for those who have not seen it and are claiming that it’s a POS don’t know Sh… This little film with no name actors is getting HUGE BUZZ and it’s spreading internationally! And that’s without a distribution company or studio, unlike Black Dynamite. Plus Scream of the Bikini has done more then just do a festival run, it’s still going and winning awards! Because of this film it’s reinvigorated my desires to see more of these classics which Scream of the Bikini spoofs on. So yes, it looks like a POS on the trailer but so did Black Dynamite! I think that in and of itself is the spoof! Because I sure remember the original trailers of those classics and they were funny POS. Scream of the Bikini is a deffinate must see! And I am critical about alot of films and this one was a wonderfully funny treat!

  8. “So yes, it looks like a POS on the trailer but so did Black Dynamite!”

No it didn’t. Black Dynamite looked like a winner from the get go.

  9. A winner eh? Yeah… that’s why it had such a “winning” theatrical release and there is only ONE copy of it at my local Bockbuster with no festival awards attached to it! Yeah, it’s really a winner for the 2.5 mil budget. Like I said before… The simple fact that Scream of the Bikini is EVEN being compared, or spoken of, to Black D is must be an honor in and of it’s self to the film makers. I’m sure that the budget for Scream of the Bikini must have fallen at about 500k. It’s getting great buzz for such a low budget indie. Heck, we’re talking about it and you yet have to see it! All of this off of the “POS” trailer! Curious to hear what you think once you see it!

  10. I love it when people resort to using box office as an indicator of how good a film is.
I think the 84% on Rotten Tomatoes speaks volumes on how this film is a winner.

  11. I love the poster, but that trailer is dire.

  12. I admit the trailer for SOTB does not represent the film as well as it could. But seeing it in a theatre was a great time. Audience loved it. Wish I could have seen Black Dynamite in a theater. I showed BD to my film class and they dug it. Massive laughter. And Blockbuster sucks with the one copy thing. They gotta get more of BD. SOTB is micro micro budget. BD had more to work with. Whatever… does not matter. If you are enjoying yourself you let go of that stuff. Just sit back and enjoy the show. I want both films to find a large audience. I love the retro stuff mixed with a comic style.
