Film Junk Poll: What is the Best Buddy Cop Movie?

With Kevin Smith’s Cop Out coming later this month and Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s The Other Guys due out this summer, it looks like we’re in for a brand new wave of buddy cop flicks. In the meantime, however, let’s take a look back through some of the classics of the genre and pay tribute to the all-time greats. I’m a bit surprised we haven’t done this poll topic before, because surely it’s one we all have an opinion on. Do you prefer buddy cop films that are strictly comedies or do you like them a little more serious and action-packed? Cast a vote for your favourite in this week’s poll, and then list off all the ones I missed in the comments below.

Traditional buddy cop movie, I think the choice is clear: Lethal Weapon (which I voted for)
Spoof buddy cop movie, Hot Fuzz is the way to go.
Posted by Bob The Slob on February 5th, 2010Tango & Cash wins based on score alone.
Posted by dirrrtyfrank on February 5th, 2010Looking at all the movies on the list that I liked made me realize what a gold mine the genre has been for Hollywood. My vote? Lethal Weapon.
“I’m too old for this shit!”
Posted by HFD on February 5th, 2010There are a number of praiseworthy options up there, but my vote went to Rush Hour. Alone, the movie’s two leads are on-screen headaches. But together, we see a chemistry so prevailing and natural, it’s almost innate. The two just seem to bounce off each other. Majority of critics seem to hate it or love it, and I consider myself part of the latter.
Hot Fuzz, by the way, was terrible.
Posted by Crews on February 5th, 2010My vote went to Lethal Weapon as well. I thought about Rush Hour, and actually Bad Boys as well, since they both had a lot of chemistry and humor between the two leads. Hot Fuzz never really struck me as being a “buddy” cop movie, I thought Simon Pegg was really main character. Also, I felt Lethal Weapon was a better overall movie than the rest, and really defined the genre.
Posted by Brendan on February 5th, 2010I wanted to add that I re-watched Alien Nation after District 9 came out, since there were some similarities. But I realized it really was just a buddy cop movie, and didn’t delve into race relations like I thought it should. It just sort of introduced the concept and left it there.
Posted by Brendan on February 5th, 2010You use an image from Top Dog to lure people in, and then you neglect to include it in the poll? For shame, Sean. For shame.
Posted by Wintle on February 5th, 2010You know Lethal Weapon is the correct answer … but nuts I had to vote for Tango and Cash. Two car chases in 8 minutes, Kurt Russel and Sly raiding the bad guy’s lair which has a self destruct ’nuff said.
Posted by Ian on February 5th, 2010Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. There is a poster for it hanging above my computer.
Posted by Film Ape on February 5th, 2010I voted for Lethal Weapon, but I do like Alien Nation quite a bit.
