The Silent House Trailer: Real Time Handheld Horror from Uruguay

Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s [REC] was in large part responsible for not only the resurgence of first-person perspective horror films over the past few years, but also the rise in exposure for Spanish-language genre films. Guillermo Del Toro has obviously helped a lot in that department as well, and although they hail from Spain and Mexico respectively, it seems like the the next hot bed for talented filmmakers might actually be Uruguay. A few months ago we posted about the sensation caused by Fede Alvarez and his short film Panic Attack!, and now there is a trailer making the rounds for a new Uruguayan horror film called La Casa Muda (The Silent House).

The Silent House is about a father and daughter who go out to an old farmhouse to make some repairs and update it, but when they stay overnight, things start to get a little bit spooky. It’s another horror film shot with a handheld camera, but director Gustavo Hernandez took it a step further by also doing the entire movie in one continuous take. They are calling it the first horror film to do so, and although that’s probably up for debate… that’s not all! As if there weren’t enough gimmicks already, the movie is also apparently shot entirely on a digital SLR (the Canon EOS 5D Mark II)! In spite of that limitation, it actually looks surprisingly well shot. Check out the trailer after the jump; for more info stay tuned to the official website.

  1. Wow I want that camera now. As far as the trailer goes, it didn’t seem “spooky” at all, although, I am really interested in the project.

  2. aaaah that camera, and ones like them, only go for 20 min per memory card? that continuous thing is BS marketing

  3. Lol, was i the only one laughing whenever that stupid soundtrack came on? I mean, the whole trailer looks kinda like a doomed-to-fail thing. And the camera didnt even feel like a handheld camera. Felt more like being in a movie.
