Empire Readers Pick The Worst Movies of All Time

Although I enjoy reading lists and countdowns as much as the next guy, I’ve never been a big fan of “Worst Movie” lists, because they only tend to focus on big budget Hollywood screw-ups and not the low budget amateur crap. I obviously understand why; there’s an infinite amount of the amateur stuff out there, and it’s a lot easier to forgive. However, it’s also probably about a thousand times worse. There’s also the fact that most people tend to avoid movies that are really bad, and if you haven’t seen them, you can’t really include them on your list.
At any rate, I suppose it’s fun to argue over what’s bad just as much as what’s good, and Empire Magazine recently polled their readers to create a comprehensive tally of the 50 Worst Movies Ever. Just like the Razzies, most of the choices are pretty predictable, and sadly a lot of the choices are fairly recent flicks as well (which probably says a lot about Empire’s readership). However, being that it is a U.K. publication, there are also a few movies I had never heard of (ie. Sex Lives of the Potato Men?). Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin ended up topping the list… pretty shocking, right? Check out their top (I mean bottom) 20 after the jump, or head over to Empire to see the full list.
1. Batman and Robin
2. Battlefield Earth
3. The Love Guru
4. Raise the Titanic
5. Epic Movie
6. Heaven’s Gate
7. Sex Lives of the Potato Men
8. The Happening
9. Highlander 2: The Quickening
10. The Room
11. Meet the Spartans
12. Norbit
13. The Avengers
14. Disaster Movie
15. Catwoman
16. Plan 9 from Outer Space
17. White Chicks
18. Dreamcatcher
19. Gigli
20. Swept Away

I think movies like Epic movie and meet the spartans shouldn’t be counted. There was never any doubt that they weren’t horrible since their inception.
Posted by Jersey Jason on February 3rd, 2010They should be counted as long as there are morons out there buying tickets to see them in the theaters.
Posted by Itchy-Finger on February 3rd, 2010As Sean said, this is a pretty predictable list. My list would be more of the “so bad it has a cult following” variety bad films, such as Manos: The Hands of Fate or Troll 2.
Posted by Scott on February 3rd, 2010The Happening at #8?! Really?! I usually respect Empire’s editorial staff but that is ridiculous.
Posted by projectgenesis on February 3rd, 2010michael ciminos heavens gate is one of the best neo-western movies of all time! …dreamcatcher and the happening aren’t that bad!!!
Posted by chris on February 3rd, 2010What about Leonard Part 6 or Grease.
Posted by Mason on February 3rd, 2010I’m impressed that many have seen the Room for it to get that many votes
Posted by Goon on February 3rd, 2010The bashing of “The Happening” is still ridiculous. That film was well directed and definitely more fun (in a good way) than a lot of other releases last year. Same goes for “Land of the Lost”.
Posted by Sven on February 3rd, 2010Why Dreamcatcher and not say … Alone in the Dark?
Posted by Tim on February 3rd, 2010Where’s Hudson Hawk?
Posted by Duke Togo on February 3rd, 2010The Happening was total crap. I horrible idea behind a terribly directed film. However it is Shalamadamadingdong’s ‘R’ rating claim to fame.
For more ‘R’ rated hilarity watch The Happening’s dvd special features. Just amazing.
Posted by dumbass on February 3rd, 2010No Avatar? Well damn, maybe next list.
Posted by Captain N on February 3rd, 2010I wouldve put Dreamcatcher in the top 5. That movie showed how bad movies can be.
Posted by Chris on February 3rd, 2010Well, I’m kinda proud to say I’ve only seen one of those movies: Highlander 2. I can confirm it was a turd deserving of this list.
Posted by Brendan on February 3rd, 2010I guess a movie can only really be considered bad if it aspired to be good. If it had some ambition but then utterly failed. A movie that set out with all expectations that it would be bad cannot really count.
Posted by Maopheus on February 3rd, 2010Yeah, I love that “The Room” is on here. You go, Tommy Wiseau. That little film’s gonna make it big someday… *Sniff*
Posted by Falsk on February 3rd, 2010Dreamcatcher was one of the worst films I’d ever seen. But I don’t think the happening needs to be on there. That’s not even the worst M. Night film.
Sorry jay but lady in water says hello
Posted by The Man on February 3rd, 2010Dude…The Room was AMAZING. One of the most influential movies of our time.
“You can put your stupid comments in your pocket”
Posted by Yih on February 4th, 2010There needs to be an addendum to this list with Jennifer’s Body added.
Never mind the fact that this list is kind of skewed toward newer releases. They obviously didn’t dredge the film archives much for stinkers beyond Plan 9
Posted by Ben on February 4th, 2010THE WORST FILMS EVER MADE WERE NOT RELEASED IN MAINSTREAM THEATERS!
Seriously, this is a list for readers of PEOPLE MAGAZINE not for film buffs.
Posted by Bob The Slob on February 4th, 2010I’m glad Freddy Got Fingered is not a “worst” list for once! An unjustly bashed comedy gem.
Posted by Kyrkos on February 5th, 2010But I liked dreamcatcher D:
Posted by Little Tony on February 6th, 2010Surprised that Borat and Bruno don’t top the list, maybe cuz he’s english or something. They certainly are two of the worst movies ever. Gigli on the other hand is hugely underrated, excellent movie if you ask me.
Posted by TheOtherJamesTaylor on February 8th, 2010The fact there are more recent movies says more about the quantity of crap being shoved onto screens these days for a quick buck, rather than the readers themselves.
My personal bottom list will probably be those ____ Movie(s) as a single block followed by Batman and Robin, which by now has achieved a kitschy (even endearing) place in the “so bad it’s good” category.
Posted by stevie_baby on February 9th, 2010I agree with a lot of the list although I would have put Norbit more near no.1 than 12 because it’s just tasteless and one of the worst films.
Posted by Joshua on February 9th, 2010The Happening was really bad too and M knight hasn’t been good since unbreakable and the rest of His movies are pure crap.
No one want’s an ending that says “ahhhh run, nature is mad at us releasing spores forcing us to kill ourselves!”
That is not a plot that’s propaganda.
I don’t think Plan 9 should be in there because it’s a B-movie and you would have to count many others along that line but I do understand why they put it on the list.
For the most part I would have rearranged the list numbers but mostly agree with the movies listed.
Highlander 2, the only sequel I ever saw that actually ruined the original.
Posted by Mark on March 30th, 2010I’m sorry i cannot respect this list as I do not see the movie flubber in it
Posted by glen on May 7th, 2010Worst 10 from a guy who KNOWS:
Inland Empire
The Room
troll 2
Manos: The hands of fate
Plan 9 from outer space
Charly días de sangre
Son of the mask
Gigli
Nick Knight
Glitter
Enjoy, if you dare…
