David Spade and TBS Team Up for Joe Dirt Animated Series

The three of you out there clamoring for a sequel to David Spade’s 2001 comedy The Adventures of Joe Dirt will be excited to hear that the mulleted janitor is making a comeback — in animated form. Variety reports that TBS has signed a deal with Spade to develop a cartoon series based on the movie, in the hopes of getting an original show that they can pair with Family Guy re-runs. The animated show will be produced through Sony Pictures TV and Happy Madison Productions, with Spade, the film’s co-writer Fred Wolf, and Donick Carey (The Simpsons, Just Shoot Me!, Bored to Death) penning the script.
With all the other animated possibilities out there, is this something we really need? The original movie never even made its money back at the box office. Heck, I’d rather see an animated version of Just Shoot Me! or Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star over this, but perhaps they’re trying to ride the popularity of My Name is Earl a little bit. Are you a fan of David Spade? Do you think there is any chance in hell that this will be a decent show?

Posted by Matt on January 29th, 2010I’ll say this: Joe Dirt was funnier than it had any right to be.
I’m not sure I’d watch the animated series, but I liked the movie.
Posted by Deven Science on January 31st, 2010Joe Dirt more than made its money back at the box office, and then exploded on DVD for years thereafter. Sorry, dude, but that’s a serious fact. Look into it before you state stuff like you have in your synopsis. You might not like it, but it was selling 13,000 dvds a week two years after it came out. There were serious discussions to do a movie sequel, until the principals decided they wanted to leave a good thing (to some) alone. Almost ten years later, when approached for the zillionith time to expand on the title, they relented.
