Sam Worthington to Star in Alex Proyas’ Dracula Year Zero?

Coming off of his last film Knowing, director Alex Proyas has had a number of possible projects in development including The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag, The Tripods and Dracula Year Zero. It had been a while since we heard anything about Dracula Year Zero, however, and it looked like the movie was on the verge of falling by the wayside. Now this week we have a report indicating that the movie is showing signs of life once again, thanks to the potential attachment of rising action star of Sam Worthington!
According to a scooper for Latino Review, Universal needs to make a decision this week about their production slate for 2011, and one of the movies being considered is Dracula Year Zero. Sam Worthington is the man being lined up to play Dracula himself, a young Vlad The Impaler at the height of his power. Alex Proyas is still attached to direct, with a budget of over $100 million and Michael De Luca (Ghost Rider, The Love Guru) on board as producer.
If you think this project sounds familiar, that could be because Brad Pitt’s production company and Summit Entertainment recently announced a movie called Vlad, also looking to delve into the true story behind the Dracula myth. Now that someone else is working on a similar project, it probably makes it even more likely that Year Zero will find its way to the big screen. That said, how do you feel about Sam Worthington as Dracula? Can you see it?

Michael De Luca sounds like the worst producer in the world
Posted by AlexG on January 26th, 2010I first wanted to say that Sam Worthington must have the best agent in Hollywood! I mean this guy literally came out of nowhere and has been cast as the lead in not one but three blockbuster films, WTF. Hell even other aussie actors like Russell Crowe, and Guy Peirce had to earn their stripes by acting in B list films before hitting it big.
In any case I really like Sam Worthington but he has yet to show the type of range required for the role of Dracula. The guy is extremely nondescript at times on screen and lacks the type of Bravado Garry Oldman had in his performance.
To me this sounds like it could be a cool movie but with a different actor as the lead. Perhaps Mark Strong would make for a better lead.
