Watch Two Clips from Vincenzo Natali’s Splice

Another genre film to keep an eye on at this year’s Sundance Film Festival is the Canadian sci-fi flick Splice, starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley. Directed by Vincenzo Natali (Cube), the movie is about two scientists who mix human DNA with animal genes to create a living creature (Dren) that is strange and potentially dangerous. The movie supposedly had a bit of trouble finding its way to conception as well, but now that Guillermo Del Toro has put his name on it as executive producer, it seems to be attracting a fair bit of attention.

Although there is no official trailer as of yet, there are a pair of clips from the film that have been released online and they are definitely worth taking a look at. It’s pretty clear this is something that David Cronenberg fans will want to check out (as confirmed by an early review from our friends over at Row Three), and it seems like it could end up being this year’s Pontypool (that is, a Canadian genre flick that manages to gain respect outside of Canada). I believe a theatrical release is planned for April here in Canada courtesy of E1, although unfortunately there is no U.S. distributor as of yet. Check out the two clips after the jump and let Dren warm your twisted little heart.

  1. That walking penis freaks me out.

  2. I will pass on this one. Looks very very bad. Would have to agree with Drewsifer above also. Kind of freaky

  3. I think freaky is the point, as are the sexual undertones.

  4. looks good..

although i don’t expect a large amount of people to find a furless chicken that scary..

we are used to Big monsters … or at least human size..
but hey works as a comedy as well..

There is something about this film that reminds me the MOON.

  5. plot and visuals look interesting. definitely keeping an eye out for this!

ps. think the second video is a little out of sync.

  6. cool, Cube is one of my favorite one room, independent story/film of all time.

  7. Sci-fi + Sarah Polley? Count me in.

  8. looks good, but I get more of a spielberg vibe than cronenberg.

  9. @keithtalent. Look for Mr. Nobody, the other unreleased Sarah Polley science fiction film which is as good (possibly better) than Splice.

Hopefully E1 will see fit to open both of these in theatres, across canada at least.
