Robert Zemeckis Casts The Beatles for Yellow Submarine Remake

Looks like the cast is coming together for Robert Zemeckis’ next project, which of course, will be yet another 3-D performance capture film along the lines of Beowulf and A Christmas Carol. It was announced last summer that Zemeckis would be remaking the classic animated Beatles film Yellow Submarine, and now he has four actors in mind to play the Fab Four on screen.
According to THR’s Heat Vision Blog, the following actors are currently in negotiations to play John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr: Dean Lennox Kelly (Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel), Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Saw), Peter Serafinowicz (Couples Retreat, The Peter Serafinowicz Show), and Adam Campbell (Epic Movie, Harper’s Island). They don’t really look like any of The Beatles, but that doesn’t matter since their movements will simply be mapped to 3-D representations of the characters. It also doesn’t matter that they probably can’t sing like The Beatles since actual Beatles songs will be used instead. These are merely the flesh stand-ins for the motion capture and voice recording process. It probably could have been anyone capable of a decent British accent… or could it? Do you think these guys are good choices? No word on what kind of timeline we are looking at for the release of this film, but it seems to be moving along rather quickly so far.

Posted by Mrespony on January 12th, 2010The fact that I have an aversion to animation has always made Yellow Submarine a film that I have difficulty in watching. I bought the DVD years ago and I still haven’t gotten around to watching it. (I have seen the televised version of the movie.)
I am a Beatlemaniac, but I’m fine with Zemeckis remaking this film. Someone should reboot The Beatles franchise and make a colour version of A Hard Day’s Night with Zac Ephron playing Paul and The Beatles music hip-hopized. (I kid, of course. We all know that hip-hop is dead.)
Posted by Reed Farrington on January 12th, 2010Peter Serafinowicz is a genius impersonator. He’s also the voice of Darth Maul.
Posted by Swarez on January 13th, 2010“A decent British Accent”? What the hell? What is that? The Beatles were from Liverpool. That is not a “decent” or “standard” “british accent”. It’s Scouse, and it’s unique. The fact that they are British does not mean they can do a Liverpudlian accent.
But it’s an awesome idea, and I will be among the first to acquire a ticket when it comes out. Yellow Submarine is one of my favourite films of all time.
Signed a 19-year-old Beatlemaniac.
Posted by Sam on February 14th, 2010Reed, Reed, Reed. You walking contradiction of a humanoid. You can’t call yourself a Beatlemaniac and not like Yellow Submarine. That’s like saying I’m a fan of Film Junk but not Reed Farrington. It’s just not possible.
Which reminds me, I’d like you to do a cover version of A Little Help From My Friends on the next Cantankerous podcast. And I don’t even want to hear about how Jay doesn’t want to do it anymore or you’re quitting. You and I both know that you love doing it and you would trade a rare photograph of William Shatner caught without his toupee and girdle just to keep doing it.
Posted by Zoo on September 12th, 2010Ha ha. “With a Little Help from My Friends” would be a good song to do, especially an ironic solo version, but I’m afraid my singing career is over.
Zoo, you did inspire an interesting question. Why has there never been a photo released of a balding William Shatner? That would be worth money. I wonder if Shatner would ever do a role that required him to appear bald. At this point in his life, I would hope he has gotten over his vanity. Even when he did the TV series Barbary Coast in which he was a disguise artist, I don’t think he played a bald character. I could be wrong since I haven’t seen all the episodes.
Posted by Reed Farrington on September 12th, 2010Unfortunately, much like his waistline, Shatner’s vanity and ego have grown over the years. I don’t think Shatner would ever accept a role sans hairpiece. I wonder how many times he’s updated that rug over the years? I’ve always wanted Leonard Nimoy to do one more episode of In Search Of… William Shatner’s old toupees.
Do you think Shatner should have a cameo in the new Yellow Submarine, singing Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds? That would be awesome! In 3D too. Now that would sell tickets.
