At a recent Q&A in Hollywood, Cameron said that the original intention was always to make a trilogy, and that a sequel is definitely happening. Surprised?

for those wanting more ideas about the direction of the films, the book: A Confidential Report on the Biological and Social History of Pandora, hints at a lot of things.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
I don’t know how this works with how Cameron sold Fox on spending the money developing Pandora, as the book hints that the conclusion of the trilogy will be a rebel movement using the plants, minerals, magic of Pandora to reinvigorate a dieing “Bladerunner like” Earth. that makes me think a lot of money will be needed to create this dystopic Earth?!
Posted by rus in chicago on January 11th, 2010Not surprised at all.
Posted by Billy Boyd Cape on January 11th, 2010And I don’t doubt him.
Don’t expect it to be as good as Avatar, purely because it won’t have the look of mind-blowing sfx
Meanwhile, Neill Blomkamp is hemming and hawing over whether he’ll have a good enough story for the District 9 sequel/prequel that everyone wants…
Posted by DHE on January 11th, 2010Why?? The movie itself was a complete movie. You don’t need a sequel(s).

I agree, I loved “Avatar” depsite its flaws, but I’m of the idea that its great as a stand alone film.
Posted by Matt Keith on January 11th, 2010Yea great as a movie in 4-5 years before the CGI ages.
Posted by Jesus on January 11th, 2010I personally didn’t like Avatar that much, and the mindblowing feeling went away pretty quick, which made the CGI being constantly used a bit boring at times. Mix this with a pretty simple story (and i have given Cameron’s excuse for simple story some thoughts), and you have a movie that deservers 3+ out of 6. That is my personal opinion about how i felt the movie was, both in a normal way and in the visual. It is not as Goon claims: On purpose to make the movie fail.
Shut your goddamn mouth Jesus. No one likes religion, or religious people. It’s pretty logic that those who don’t like Avatar are those who believe in God.
Posted by fuckingshit on January 11th, 2010I smell “Matrix” (with each movie it got worse) Not just worse but bad!
Posted by Big Hungry on January 11th, 2010Hey fuckingshit, I liked you better when your name was triple H and you weren’t arguing with yourself as “Jesus”.
Posted by Sean on January 11th, 2010I will have to say this real quick. James Cameron has proven me wrong again with Avatar. I did see it again and liked it even better. So while I don not see these being on par with the first. His track so far is good. So please prove me wrong Mr. Cameron….
Posted by Big Hungry on January 11th, 2010lol, Sean
Posted by pcch7 on January 11th, 2010What about Terminator 2? That was a fucking amazing sequel that JC did. I think there is major potential to make this a trilogy, and if he was thinking about making this a trilogy the entire time we have to believe that the next two would be good, maybe even great. He is not one to just sit back and let a movie get made because there is money to be made. Give the guy a little credit.
Posted by wrestlemania on January 11th, 2010I am sure Avatar2 is going to be a way better movie than the First one.
As cameron has promised.. now that the technology is out there..This time he is going to focus on the story.
I sure can’t wait for Cameron’s Dark Distopic- post apocalyptic Earth.
Now that he has his day by day growing fan-base ready and willing to come again back to the theater for more he is surely going to Fuck our brains mentally with a truly awesome movie and enjoy it.
Posted by KYriakos on January 11th, 2010Call me crazy but I don’t think Avatar needs a sequel let alone trilogy. I think it should exist on it’s own and Cameron should go off and do Battle Angel Alita!
That aside one thing I would love to see is some sort of Walking with Dinosaurs type of Blueray about the world of Pandora, now that would be kick ass!
Posted by Marc on January 11th, 2010@Marc
I do hope he does Battle Angel first. We have been waiting long enough for that film.
Posted by Matt Keith on January 11th, 2010I heard that stephen lang and sogorney weaver will be back !?
Posted by tnelso16 on August 4th, 2010the only way to pull this off is for one to at least be a prequel(like the underworld films, with one sequel and one prequel)maybe they can make col quaritch. more of an antogonist, and how he gets his head/face scar like what creature scratched him, how and why he is so embittered at the na’vi and what lead to his and weaver’s character bad blood.sam worthington can come back as his dead twin brother who was part of the avatar program with perhaps a conspiracy around how he died and who really killed him and why? the first avatar had a lot of hints that could lead to a prequel as well as a sequel.
