Film Junk’s Top 10 Movies of 2009

top10of2009

After all the complications associated with our Top 20 Films of the Decade list, we thought we’d simply cut the crap for our Best of 2009 discussion and post each of our individual Top 10 lists unfettered. Of course, as luck would have it, we ended up picking quite a few of the same films, to the point where they almost seem like the same list, only in a different order. Pretty ironic, right?

Either way, before all this stuff becomes completely irrelevant, we present to you our Top 10 Movies of 2009 for further inspection. For a slightly more in-depth discussion, listen to this week’s Episode #251 of the Film Junk Podcast. In the meantime, feel free to respond with your own lists in the comments below!

  1. I love Gregs honorable mention of Bitch Slap! Already pre-ordered it on blu-gay =)

  2. So… Greg is the only one smart enough to put Observe and Report on his top 10 List? ;)

  3. Goon’s list wins. But seriously I can’t believe you guys like Fantastic Mr Fox and Inglorious Bastards that much.

How (excluding Goon) don’t have Moon, A Serious Man, Up, Watchmen, Funny People…etc.

But then agains some of my favourites came out in 2009 when they came out in 2008 over there like Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire, Synecdoche New York….

  4. Did Reed have a list?

  5. I am pretty sure Reed does not have a list. If he does, I’ll be happy to add it, but I don’t think he actually saw 10 movies in 2009.

I think he said he’s working on his top 10 of all time or top 10 of the decade… not sure which.

    Stephen King’s Top 10 films of 2009:

    1. THE HURT LOCKER
    2. THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT
    3. THE ROAD
    4. DISGRACE
    5. THE READER
    6. DISTRICT 9
    7. LAW ABIDING CITIZEN
    8. THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3
    9. FANTASTIC MR. FOX
    10.2012

  7. really, one Avatar… the rest of you guys couldn’t drop the “to cool for school” attitude and give it up…that’s cool, I guess you got to look out for your peeps in the blogsphere. ya’ know, keep it REAL!

    p.s. Goons the man

  8. my list is a little different than when i sent to Sean bc I’ve been rewatching a lot of stuff over the holidays. Watchmen is now in hon. mention, Funny People would be no. 10 and Basterds and Fox would switch places. So anal.

  9. I haven’t seen enough movies from 2009 yet to make a top 10 list- but many of the ones I did see and liked are on your lists, like Drag Me to Hell, Inglourious Basterds, Anvil, Watchmen, and District 9, Star Trek, Observe and Report. All of these except perhaps Anvil and Observe and Report, I think I would still have seen if I was not a Film Junk listener. I may not have seen Inglourious Basterds as early as I did- might have waited until the 4th weekend for the word of mouth to get big enough without you guys talking it up. I just saw (500) Days of Summer and really liked it. It might at least be an honorable mention in my book.

  10. Inglorious Basterds is the best!

  11. I’m surprised to see such a strong showing for Fantastic Fox and such a poor showing for Observe & Report.

just goes to show your. just goes to show you.

  12. If I added another couple hon mentions I’m sure Observe and Report would have been one of them.

  13. Interesting lists all around. If I were a bitchy little nitpicker who likes throwing my opinions around, I’d say the only films I have an issue with on these lists are Paper Heart, Away We Go and Watchmen.

  14. Great call on Polytechnique Jay. Not one a lot of people saw but definitely worthwhile.

  15. Jersey Jason, thx for caring about my opinion, but I think you’ll have to wait until the year 2012 before my top ten for 2009 is finalized. :-)

  16. what about predictions for good upcoming movies?

how about Despicable Me? saw this trailer in theaters this weekend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsiayV5LuD0

    looks hilarious with steve carrell!

  17. Ya. No Avatar? That’s gotta be a joke.

  18. “what about predictions for good upcoming movies? ”

The next show will have an Anticipated Movies list

  19. Some decent lists, I think I agree with Goon’s most, aside from Avatar and Funny People which wouldn’t even make my top 20. I’d also probably have a couple of foreign films on my list, Mother for sure and most likely The White Ribbon.

  20. Good work guys.
I’m watching Robocop – I hope Aronofsky remakes this, I love Robocop but after the shit sequels and tv shows he needs to come back swinging.
I concur, Avatar would be up there on mine. Basterds doesn’t really do it for me as much as Kill Bill – I liked it and I’ve seen it 3 times but still, something about it I cant jive with.

  21. “I am pretty sure Reed does not have a list…I don’t think he actually saw 10 movies in 2009.”

This made me laugh out loud. Get busy Reed!

  22. Avatar is shit, good that it is mostly not included. Good lists guys.

  23. My Favorites of 2009

    1. A Serious Man
    2. Where The Wild Things Are
    3. The Road
    4. The Hurt Locker
    5. Away We Go
    6. The Invention of Lying
    7. Humpday
    8. Two Lovers
    9. The Cove
    10. Up In The Air

Honorable Mentions: Inglorious Bastards, House of the Devil, Black Dynamite, World’s Greatest Dad, Anvil: The Story of Anvil, Ponyo, The White Ribbon, District 9

  24. I enjoyed your takes of what you liked the most this year. And of course, I’m not pompous enough to tell you what should be where and whats missing as their your personal favorites. ;)

  25. of course, Coraline…….

  26. Rus. Why do you care so much about if people like Avatar or not?
So what if people didn’t care for it as much as you? It’s not a conspiracy, some people like it, others not so much. That’s how it is with every movie ever made.

  27. Great, I’ll treat these more like checklists and be well on my way. Much appreciated.

  28. District 9 still suck’s ASS!

  29. Does anyone else have this problem?

I saw Inglorious Basterds in the theater and was blown away by how good it was, but now that it is available on DVD I am not rushing out to get it the way I would be normally? Partly that is because I am going to be getting a blu-ray soon and that has changed how I buy any SD disk now, but it is also I am wondering if it is sort of like a Disneyland syndrome i.e if you can go everyday it ceases to be special?

  30. Is this the same Goon that posts at the Filmspotting Blog?

  31. (Please bear in mind these are by UK release dates.)
    10. District 9
    9. In The Loop
    8. The Wrestler
    7. Up
    6. The Class
    5. A Serious Man
    4. The Hurt Locker
    3. Let The Right One In
    2. Moon
    1. The White Ribbon

Honourable mentions: Inglourious Basterds, Sugar, Fish Tank, Adventureland, Avatar.

  32. I’ve been posting my various lists all over the site, so I might as well post my top of 2009. :D

    1. Observe and Report
    2. Up in the Air (I just saw this last night so that’s kind of a cheat I guess ;) )
    3. Avatar
    4. Drag me to Hell
    5. Fantastic Mr. Fox
    6. District 9
    7. Funny People
    8. 2012
    9. 500 Days of Summer
    10. Not Quite Hollywood

Honorable Mentions: Paper Heart, Coraline, Bruno, Up, Paranormal Activity (does this one count since it was technically released in like 2007?), Last House on the Left, Land of the Lost, The Hangover.

I still have yet to see Inglorious Basterds because i’m an asshole, and I think that would probably top my list if I had seen it (although it might not top Observe and Report… we’ll see) but hey, what are you gonna do? :D

  33. @xego: I have the Blu-ray and have watched it twice since I bought it, plus watched a couple of particular scenes a few times. Definitely no Disneyland syndrome for me.

  34. Goon! love your rant on Avatar.
Truthfully, I had zero interest in it, but was blown away by it.
I actually ducked out of the way to avoid a gas canister that I swore was going to hit me.
This movie, should be moved to theme parks and be treated as an experience.
It will be a shame when it’s theatrical run ends.

  35. Surprised at the lack of love for Where the Wild Things Are. Only one and at #10. I think that’s my favorite film of the year. We shall see though.

  36. Go take it up with Kurt, Andrew. He calls it his ‘perfect movie’ and it didnt even get in his top 10, meanwhile after apologizing through his entire Up in the Air review, he put it in his top 10. Weird.

Jason – I have a feeling that Avatar is going to be a movie that gets rereleased in theaters every couple years since the experience simply won’t be the same at home.

  37. if inglorious bastards was the best movie in the last ten years then that was a horrible ten years in film making.

  38. Rick: are you just a troll, or are you going to enlighten is with your choices and/or why you hated the film?

  39. If you remember the podcast Jay was the only one who liked WTWTA. I think Greg really disliked it.

Unlike Avatar, WTWTA is not a perfectly universal story. It’s really only for a certain type of person.

  40. I didn’t realize 2009 was ten years long.

  41. I hope you guys are right about Observe & Report, I just blind-bought the Blu for $20. Seems like it should be right up my alley though, love the super dark/black comedies.

  42. the list needs to change

    Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa7ck5mcd1o

  43. to show how we did our math for the concensus list, if our lists here were turned into a top 5 it would most likely be

    1. Inglourious Basterds
    2. Fantastic Mr. Fox
    3. District 9
    4. Up In The Air
    5. Drag Me To Hell

(left off Anvil since Jay did a separate list, and Hurt Locker since I didnt see it, both of which would or could have taken the number 4/5 slots)

  44. yep massive lack of world movies in this lot… but glad to see these guys werent sucked in by the eye candy of avatar, i felt like i was watching a playstation 9 video game

  45. 1. Up in the Air
    2. Where the Wild Things Are
    3. The Hurt Locker
    4. An Education
    5. District 9
    6. Coraline
    7. Star Trek
    8. Zombieland
    9. The Way We Get By (fantastic documentary… look it up!)
    10. Avatar

    HELL YEAH!!!

  46. Mr. Tenis:

Everyone on FilmJunk liked Avatar, its just that I was the only one who liked it enough for top ten. sorry to disappoint.

For ‘world cinema’ I’d have included The Class high on my top ten, but it was enough of a ‘technically 2008′ movie that I left it off. Other stuff I will have to wait to get around to, am specifically looking forward to the White Ribbon.
