2009 Film Junk Reader’s Choice Award Winners
Here at Film Junk we value your opinion just as much as our own (most of the time!), so for the past few years we’ve been doing an annual poll to determine the best movies of the year in a variety of genres and categories. This year we had the most participants yet, so hopefully the results will truly reflect the views of the majority of Film Junk’s readers and listeners.
As always, even though we made an effort to keep each category competitive, there were still some movies that won by a landslide — the Drama, Sci-Fi Action and Documentary categories in particular were no contest. By far the tightest race was the Foreign Film category, with just a few votes separating all five nominees. So, without any further ado, feast your eyes on the full list of winners for the 2009 Film Junk Reader’s Choice Awards.

The Hangover is the funniest COMEDY, but Adventureland is the better movie (love that thing and I neither grew up in or like the ’80s!) Didn’t really like Gomorrah, hyperlink cinema is definitely not my thing, but respect it’s achievement. Still Lebanon, The White Ribbon, A Prophet > Gomorrah imo.
Posted by AlexG on January 1st, 2010Same, I will chose Adventureland & in the loop as comedy of the year
Anyway, glad to see a non-PIXAR animation ended up on the award
Posted by Xu on January 1st, 2010In The Loop to me was the funniest of the year and most rewatchable comedy. I put that and Adventureland almost on par as an overall film.
Posted by Goon on January 2nd, 2010I would have difficulty to pick *the* best film for each genre so here are my choices:
1. Best comedies:
I haven’t seen a lot of them, but I’ll pick “In the Loop”, “The Trotsky” and “Inglourious Basterds”.
2. Best horror films:
I didn’t see “Paranormal Activities” or “Trick ‘r Treat”, but “Drag Me to Hell” was a joke because of the accumulation of nonsensical situations (ex: the leading character not leaving the parking as quickly as possible while she thinks that old lady is dead). So I’ll agree with “Pontypool”.
3. Best science-fiction films:
I agree with the choice of “District 9″ and “Watchmen”.
4. Best action films:
“The Hurt Locker” and “Fifty Dead Men Walking”.
5. Best dramas:
“J’ai tué ma mère”, “Polytechnique”, “Cairo Time” and “Crackie”.
6. Best “indie”:
Posted by Anh Khoi Do on January 2nd, 2010“(500) Days of Summer”,
The readers choice award fucking sucks.
Posted by hhh on January 2nd, 2010Glad to see things like Moon adn Where the Wild Things Are won.
Posted by Billy Boyd Cape on January 2nd, 2010Look at the other years, there were way more categories you should’ve done. like Best Film, Best Comic Book Movie, etc.
Posted by Billy Boyd Cape on January 2nd, 2010I don’t think there were enough comic book movies this year. Wolverine, Watchmen and Surrogates? Whiteout?
I wanted to do Best Film but I couldn’t figure out how to make a free-form entry field with the survey plug-in I was using.
Posted by Sean on January 2nd, 2010I don’t know about that inglorious basterds as best comedy man. overall this makes sense, But lets hop in the way back machine and pick our best for 2000. (time machine whirling sound)
Best comedy: Wonder Boys
Posted by drewsifer on January 2nd, 2010Best Drama: Requiem for a Dream
Best Foreign : Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Best Indie: The Virgin Suicides
Best Porno: Crouching Vagina Hidden Clitoris
Best Documentary: The making of Crouching Vagina Hidden Clitoris
I’m very suprised but very happy to see Observe and Report get Runner Up in Best Comedy, since it didn’t really have a chance against the Hangover.
Posted by Drew on January 2nd, 2010Yeah I would have voted for In The Loop as best comedy, though I have watched The Hangover twice over the holidays (girlfriend and Mom had not seen it) and I still find it amusing. Anyone watched it with the commentary and know if it is worthwhile?
I can’t argue too much with the choices made, aside from specific slottings, given the options Sean put forth.
Posted by KeithTalent on January 2nd, 2010No fuck you sean. This is not a readers choice awards. this is your choice your. your lazy ass choice awards. I mean, u handled the nominations worse than the oscars for crying out loud. When you showed us the nominations, we didnt know whether we shouldve laughed or cry.
Posted by fuckingshit on January 2nd, 2010Oh, and btw. The Hangover fucking sucks. Didnt laugh once. The only reason people called the movie hilarious was because the actors werent Ben Stiller or Will Ferrel or Adam Sandler. Even though their movies are equally funny, they deny every movie of theirs to be called funny, while som strange fucked up same retarded comedy with unknown comedian actors shows up, its suddenly great. I didnt Land of the Lost any much better either, but for once i agree with Jay that id rather watch that again then this hangover shit.
Posted by fuckingshit on January 2nd, 2010and where the fuck was In The Loop? Why wasnt that in the comedy nominations? Just another one of Seans lazypunkass nomination choices. Next year, let THE READERS make their own READERS NOMINATIONS Sean!
/\/\/\/\/\/\isn’t great that the homeless can get access to the internet in public Libraries/\/\/\/\/\/\
Posted by rus in chicago on January 2nd, 2010Letting the readers make their own nominations would have been chaos. If I can figure out a way to do it next year I’ll consider it.
Either way, if you liked In The Loop so much you could have voted under Best Foreign Film.
Posted by Sean on January 2nd, 2010Wow. Chill, guy. It’s a freaking movie podcast…
Posted by Falsk on January 2nd, 2010This “fuckingshit” guy is a real douche…
Posted by Jon Rocks on January 2nd, 2010This stupid little poll was worth a ‘fuck you’?
Posted by Goon on January 3rd, 2010I’m fairly certain that ‘fuckingshit’ is actually Reed Farrington.
Posted by Greg on January 3rd, 2010Well, it is true that if you say ‘fuckingshit’ three times into a mirror, Reed appears behind you with a banana, a drill and a bottle of lube.
Posted by Goon on January 3rd, 2010I’m a douche, but I’m not “f*ckingsh*t”! He or she did have a good suggestion though. Film Junk readers could nominate films in categories first. We could tabulate these, and then present the top five in each category for voting. I guess I’m standing behind “f*ckingsh*t” (which brings us back to comment 20 by Goon). (Oh, I haven’t seen “The Hangover,” yet, so I can’t endorse his comments on that film.)
At least Sean knows that if he doesn’t figure out how to make a free-form entry field for next year, then there will be at least one irate Film Junk reader.
Posted by Reed Farrington on January 3rd, 2010but he has made the nomination in a way that it has to be only 5 or 4 of each genre in each place, which has left out many movies like In The Loop in their real genre. Why can’t we just have a choice award like the one Film Junk has, where we post our top 20 movies, and than the movies with most votes are summed up as the best!?
Posted by fuckingshit on January 3rd, 2010“but he has made the nomination in a way that it has to be only 5 or 4 of each genre in each place”
Do you yell ‘fuck you’ at the Red Lobster waiter when the ‘customer favorites’ section of the menu doesn’t have items you chose yourself?
Posted by Goon on January 3rd, 2010“Why can’t we just have a choice award like the one Film Junk has, where we post our top 20 movies, and than the movies with most votes are summed up as the best!?”
1. Are you going to pay Sean for his time?
2. Not every reader posts here or has the time to post here, but do have the time to click a couple dots on a poll. Your way just alienates a different set of readers entirely.
3. Is a web poll on a medium sized film site so sacred that it has to be so ridiculously democratic?
4. Do you really think that posting their own lists would make things all that different? I love In the Loop too man, but it wasn’t going to upset the Hangover. Sorry.
Also, you realize we’re not sending awards or cash grants to the makers of these films, right? “Readers Choice Award, as voted on by fuckingshit” is not going to appear on the back of any DVD surrounded by laurel leafs.
Posted by Goon on January 3rd, 2010Regarding THE COVE – Tell any assholes who eat a lot of fish, dolphins, like whales, are fucking mammals. Just like their mama. They are eatings MAMMALS!
For some dipshit monkey naming reason there is also a “fish” called a dolphinfish ( genius huh). That shit makes me foam at the mouth. Flipper was/is a God Damn MAMMAL. Like most humans are supposed to be. I have to go give myself a tetanus shot now.
Love the show…

Aye Carumba! You shouldn’t join my Facebook group then.
Posted by Tommy on January 3rd, 2010How about this: you can post the movies that you think should have won in each category, unrestricted by nominees, right here in the comments! Then other people can post their own and it will start something called a discussion.
I won’t be taking the time to tally them all up, but we can still see how far off the nominees were from the actual results.
Posted by Sean on January 3rd, 2010Goon whats your fucking problem, handling everything like an argument? Im not talking to you, so shut your goddamn mouth idiot.
Posted by fuckingshit on January 3rd, 2010Sean, I enjoy your Sarcasm
Posted by Drew on January 3rd, 2010Top 5 2009 list:
Posted by fuckingshit on January 3rd, 20101. District 9
2. Inglourious Basterds
3. In The Loop
4. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
5. Fantastic Mr. Fox
FUCKING SHIT FUCK!!!!!!!!!!! YOUR LIST IS IN THE WRONG ORDER!!!!!!
GET A BRAINS SHEEPLE!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Rusty James on January 3rd, 2010my Mouth Idiot’s name is Fred, and you shall refer to him as such.
Posted by Goon on January 3rd, 2010I don’t understand the popularity of this Hangover movie? I put it on last night gave it about 30 minutes and then went to make dinner checking in on it occasionally. It just didn’t seem to be all that funny. More tedious and bloated with bad hip hop.
Posted by Ian on January 3rd, 2010Be careful, Sean – I think I just saw fuckingshit on a grassy hill reading Catcher In The Rye…
Posted by Nick Robertson on January 3rd, 2010you’re confused, in a Beatles analogy Jay is Lennon, Sean – Paul, Greg – Riggo, Goon – George, and Reed is Yoko
In a Kennedy analogy Jay C. – John, Sean – Robert, Greg – Robert, Goon – Schwarzenegger, and Reed is Jackie
Posted by rus in chicago on January 3rd, 2010you’re confused, in a Beatles analogy Jay is Lennon, Sean – Paul, Greg – Riggo, Goon – George, and Reed is Yoko
In a Kennedy analogy Jay C. – John, Sean – Robert, Greg – TEDDY, Goon – Schwarzenegger, and Reed is Jackie
Posted by rus in chicago on January 3rd, 2010I wasn’t making an analogy pivoting on the target – simply suggesting that this guy is unhinged and could be on the verge of a Falling Down type tyrade.
Posted by Nick Robertson on January 3rd, 2010I still stand by my Greg/Reed – Sam/Gollum comparison.
Oh, and that he’s probably wearing skin right now… and he’s Jay.
Posted by Nick Robertson on January 3rd, 2010“In a Kennedy analogy Jay C. – John, Sean – Robert, Greg – Robert, Goon – Schwarzenegger, and Reed is Jackie”
For better or worse I’d have guessed I was Ted
Posted by Goon on January 3rd, 2010“I still stand by my Greg/Reed – Sam/Gollum comparison.”
NO NO NO
Greg is Spike, and Reed is Chester

Posted by Goon on January 3rd, 2010Goon – YES! I hadn’t seen those guys since I was probably 11-12. I wanna hear Greg say SHAAAADAAAAPPPP! The slapping is probably not a good idea.
When are we getting new podcast action?
Posted by Nick Robertson on January 3rd, 2010hah, good chance to plug the Film Junk facebook fan page. if you were on it you’d know Sean is finishing up editing it hopefully to post it tonight

Posted by Goon on January 3rd, 2010I’m going to assume that rus had a small typo and that he doesn’t think the drummer from the Beatles is Riggo.
Am I the only one that thinks comparing Film Junk to the Beatles or the Kennedy’s is kind of messed up?
Posted by Greg on January 3rd, 2010true, cast of Facts of Life is much more appropriate
Posted by rus in chicago on January 3rd, 2010Reed being Yoko is pretty funny though.
Which show was Urkel on? Talk about a perfect Reed.
Posted by Henrik on January 3rd, 2010The mirror to Cantankerous is easily the Ricky Gervais podcast, with Reed as Karl Pilkington.
Posted by Goon on January 3rd, 2010I don’t go for any of that facebook/twitter bullshit so I have to rely on pure rage to get me through.
Nah, Greg – I don’t like The Beatles and I think James Ellroy has JFK pinned.
Mush, Sean. Mush.
Posted by Nick Robertson on January 3rd, 2010Oooh, rus. How hurtful…
Posted by Greg on January 3rd, 2010I thought you’d appreciate being a Bulldog.
Posted by Goon on January 3rd, 2010Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.
Posted by Greg on January 3rd, 2010That fuckingShit%# needs to be flushed…a courtesy flush for lack of courtesy…what irony..x
