Kevin Smith’s Cop Out Trailer Starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan

We’ve got one more trailer to squeeze in before Christmas, and I think it’s one a lot of people have been waiting to see: Kevin Smith’s latest comedy Cop Out (formerly known as A Couple of Dicks)! This is the first time Kevin Smith has directed from someone else’s script, and lucky for him, the script by Robb Cullen and Mark Cullen was on the 2008 Black List of best unproduced screenplays. He also has a pretty awesome cast in Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan and Seann William Scott. So does it look like Cop Out is going to be one of the best comedies of 2009? Well… uh, I’m not so sure about that.
I have to be honest, the trailer didn’t really do much for me. I thought the intro was kind of clever, but other than that, there wasn’t really much here that made me laugh. I do think Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan will make a great comedic team, but it just feels like they didn’t have any memorable lines or scenes to showcase the movie. One weird thing is that Kevin Smith’s name is not even mentioned save for a brief flash of credits at the end of the trailer. I guess they must think that his association with the film could actually hurt the marketing campaign. Anyway, I am still cautiously optimistic, but this trailer gets a big “meh” from me. What do you think of it? Cop Out hits theatres on February 6th; watch the trailer below or head over to Apple.com for the HD treatment.

I just lost all hope for this. It looks horrid.
Posted by Kasper on December 24th, 2009Just goes to show how fucking overrated Kevin Smith is! Judging from the trailer it looks like a waste of a brilliant cast.
Posted by Napalm on December 24th, 2009Wow. Looks terrible. Looks really terrible.
Honestly I was not expecting much from this film, but did not expect it to look this bad.
Posted by KeithTalent on December 24th, 2009How does this show that Kevin Smith is overrated? He’s directing a movie based on someone else’s script. His strength comes from his own writing. That’s where he’s amazing and excels.
Posted by Matthew on December 24th, 2009Didn’t he write Zach and Miri? That was shit! As for this, if he was good he wouldn’t choose such a horrible script in the first place!
Posted by Napalm on December 24th, 2009I don’t see the ‘horrid’. What I see is something aspiring to be just slightly better than Rush Hour, which means it could go either way.
Posted by Goon on December 24th, 2009Difference is that Rush Hour was actually funny (sort of, anyway) – this clearly isn’t. This Tracy Morgan fella is like a 3rd rate Chris Tucker. Everytime he has a line that is supposed to be funny, he completely kills it. At least Tucker excells at hamming it up and acting stupid.
Posted by Kasper on December 24th, 2009Tracy Morgan is awesome on 30 Rock, much funnier than anything Chris Tucker has ever done. Unfortunately it does not seem to translate to this film, judging by the trailer; maybe it’s the writing?
Posted by KeithTalent on December 24th, 2009I agree the trailer was ‘meh’, but i felt the same way about ‘The Hangover’ trailer too. I think it’s a good sign cause, though, I dont think I have ever liked a Kevin Smith trailer before and I really like most of his films. Frankly I dont think comedy trailers should really bring ‘all the funny’ just like action films shouldn’t ‘put all the action’ in them. Just give us the basic plot, and some character interaction and thats it.
Posted by Rusty on December 24th, 2009Kevin Smith is a completely (and proudly) incompetent director, a mediocre storyteller and a moderately gifted gag writer. This movie looks bad, bad, bad. I’d rather see “Who Dat Ninja?”
Posted by Mahotoe on December 24th, 2009I was looking forward to this too but the trailer is pretty bad.
Posted by Chris on December 24th, 2009Tucker’s great in the Rush Hour franchise, among my guiltiest of pleasures, he and Jackie made a great combo. This Morgan guy does look completely unfunny from the trailer and something tells me Willis is phoning this one in. Kevin Smith is a funny man and podcaster but not that great of a filmmaker, imo
Posted by AlexG on December 24th, 2009“This Tracy Morgan fella is like a 3rd rate Chris Tucker. ”
Tucker is fine in Fifth ELement and his brief time in Jackie Brown, but otherwise he’s shit. Take a look at his filmography – he can’t even get hired he’s so one note. Tracy kills him in every way.
Posted by Goon on December 24th, 2009Oh God Goon Tucker completely destroyed Fifth Element. I had some big ass hate for him after that. I did like him in Rush Hour though.
Posted by swarez on December 24th, 2009Morgan on the other hand works well in 30 Rock but other than that I think he’s a really limited comedian.
And it looked like Smith finally had the balls to move the camera now.
Tracy Morgan is amazing, I’ve liked his stand up and I love him on 30 Rock. Add that to my enjoyment of Kevin Smith, even if he didn’t write it, and I will give this a chance. I read this was originally supposed to be the Will Farrell/Mark Wahlberg cop vehicle.
Posted by Justice on December 24th, 2009I don’t watch 30 Rock, so I wouldn’t know of his comedic talents there. Also, my reference to him being a 3rd rate Chris Tucker is ofcourse in relation to this movie looking like a 3rd rate Rush Hour – Morgan is just horribly unfunny. I haven’t watched any of Tuckers other movies, so I wouldn’t know if they’re any good.
Posted by Kasper on December 24th, 2009Rush Hour 1 was fucking funny. This looks like its trying a little to hard.
Posted by The Man on December 24th, 2009I’m sorry but this trailer was lame!
Posted by Marc on December 25th, 2009Well…. It looks shot well for a Kevin Smith movie
Posted by Drew on December 25th, 2009I think some of you are just showing off and not really saying your opinions. This trailer did look funny, even though a bit overdone too.
Posted by hhh on December 26th, 2009I’m not a fan of Chris Tucker, but where is the love for Friday?? Come on!
Posted by Greg on December 26th, 2009I’m a massive Kevin Smith fan. I only really like Clerks, Chasing Amy and Clerks 2 but him as a guy I really respect. I listen to SModcast religiously and hearing him talk about this movie gives me faith.
I’ll admit that the trailer didn’t make me do backflips or anything and that shot of Morgan laughing obnoxiously made me cringe but it does look like it has promise.
I don’t know – I was liking the trailer when the action was going down. The Seann William Scott stuff looks cool.
I usually hate comedy anyway, I’ll still watch it out of respect to Kevin.
Posted by Nick Robertson on December 27th, 2009I can see where the clip doesn’t deserve a hilarity award but Kevin Smith has mentioned numerous times that he doesn’t like to amp up the trailers to his films with a lot of jokes. Mainly because he doesn’t like seeing the entire plot of a movie he wants to see described in the preview or most of if not all the jokes.
When I saw this for the first time at Sherlock Holmes; my friend thinks that this film is targeted to a much broader audience due to the fact that Morgan carried the trailer. I believe he carried it on a crutch if anything. I laughed; I grumbled but I get it. Tracy Morgan is becoming a larger actor and the theory from my friend was that he thinks it’s targeted “across other races”. Since I’m assuming most of other cop based comedies are strictly white? No. Just his theory. Now that may come off as an odd statement but coming from him and who he is to me as a friend… I can’t I disagree. Does this mean white people don’t think Tracy Morgan is funny? Of course not and that’s ridiculous. Regardless of theories and how the first glimpse into Cop Out panned out; I think this will be another dialogue heavy comedy which in the end I’ll enjoy spending 9 bucks to see.
Or… I’m just overly curious to see how Smith does as a director.
Posted by xSaintx on December 28th, 2009Tracy Morgan can’t even talk correctly and has a very annoying voice.
