The Karate Kid Trailer Starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan

Just in time for Christmas, the first trailer for the remake of The Karate Kid has arrived online, and (I assume) will also be attached to some of the movies debuting in theatres this weekend. I have a feeling this trailer is going to cause a minor uproar wherever it plays, simply because it’s such a classic film and a lot of people probably don’t even know it’s being remade as of yet. But yes, here it is, and they’ve officially opted to maintain the original title, even though the setting has been moved to China.
I have to admit I’m a little torn on this, because although so many parts of this trailer just feel awkward and wrong, the actual storyline of a kid fighting back against his bullies is still compelling. They’re clearly trying hard to make this appear hip and urban, even using the same hip-hop song that was used for the Fighting trailer earlier this year. I’m not sold on Jaden Smith as an actor, but after seeing this I do think Jackie Chan will make a good Mr. Miyagi… er, I mean, Mr. Han. I even kinda liked the winking homage to the original fly catching scene at the end of the trailer. The Karate Kid hits theatres on June 14th; check out the trailer after the jump. What do you think, does this look better or worse than you expected?

Link is down, but I saw it elsewhere.
I agree about Jaden Smith. From the few lines in the trailer he comes off luke-warm. I’ve been against Will Smith forcing Hollywood to make a star out of his son. There’s already enough nepotism as it is. Plus, I think a good parent would want to keep his kid out of the limelight. Fame, especially now, is a huge burden on anyone, much less a child in their formative years.
The trailer looked ok, I don’t really care to see it. One they they should be able to improve on from the original is the actual karate. That’s the one thing that was impossible to buy in the originals.
Favorite part of the trailer: Jackie Chan tells Smith “Jack-et off!” That just sounded wrong, especially since it’s coming from a strange old guy befriending a young boy.
Posted by Brendan on December 22nd, 2009Looks just as horrid as I expected. A movie I will never see.
Posted by Kasper on December 22nd, 2009Looks alright, but yeah, the “Kid” is miscast. I’d rather see Angelina’s adopted bastard in that role.
Posted by Tommy on December 22nd, 2009should be a direct to dvd if you ask me
Posted by paulie on December 22nd, 2009Ugh. I couldn’t even make it through half of the trailer before turning it off. Wretched.
Posted by KeithTalent on December 22nd, 2009Okay, well, I’m going to assume everyone commenting is older than me and grew up with the film. I, on the other hand, only just recently saw the film last year (I know, I know) and am not seeing the horrors everyone else is. Maybe Will Smith’s kid is totally miscast and not really that great of an actor, maybe this is further promoting Jackie Chan’s downfall (along with that gem, “Spy Next Door”), maybe it really makes little to no sense that it’s taking place in China, but there’s certainly worse films that we’ve seen trailers for recently, right? Right!?
Posted by Falsk on December 22nd, 2009No….. his name is Dre…. it’s trying to hard to be hip.
Posted by Drew on December 22nd, 2009ABSOLUTELY DISPICABLE!!!

Posted by Bob The Slob on December 23rd, 2009Imma let you finish Jackie, but seriously you need to stop doing chitty American movies. Get involved in some good American movies, or hopefully your good Asian films can be exported to theaters here by some miracle. I cry when I see you making ‘The Spy Next Door’ and ‘Karate Kid’. Still, you can make chitty movies the rest of your career because you’ve done enough awesome ones – but that’s no fun. Have mercy on us. Long live the Drunken Master.
End scene.
Posted by Indiana Jones' Brother on December 23rd, 2009all of you are racist bigts!! you said he is a miscast because hes black, but really im not surprised that you guys feel this way about this movie, because he replacing role that a white guy played!! so because he is black the movie sucks right and you guys wont go see it just because of the fact that its a black kid and dont say it because classics shouldnt be remake because thats not the reason why you guys think it would suck
Posted by Willy Jung Kim on December 23rd, 2009I will not go see this movie for a couple of reasons, the main one being that their target audience is supposed to be total retards with no (not even superficial) knowledge whatsoever of East Asian martial arts, or even the cultural differences between different Asian countries such as China and Japan.
It makes absolutely NO SENSE WHATSOEVER that the setting was moved to China. Really, I’m supposed to believe (even if only for 2 hours) that a Chinese man who is skilled in kung fu is going to successfully teach some American expat kid karate, which is actually a Japanese discipline? Really?
Even if the action sequences leave much to be desired by today’s standards, at least with the original movie there was a genuine attempt at making the characters and the story believable than this tripe.
Posted by nohealani on December 23rd, 2009Ugh! The cheese! Just horrible!
And way to ruin a good song by Fort Minor by putting it on the trailer.

Posted by dirrrtyfrank on December 23rd, 2009I don’t know why everybody is so up in arms about this remake. The first one is hardly a milestone in cinema history.
This didn’t look any worse than the original, same plot different setting. The only thing that bugs me is that they are still calling it Karate Kid when it takes place in China and uses Kung Fu. Why not The Kung Fu Kid?
And that fly scene was pretty funny, especially if you know the original series.
This is a kids movie for crying out loud.
Posted by swarez on December 23rd, 2009I really don’t see the point to this being a remake at all. The trailer makes it look somewhat intriguing. But couldn’t they have done an original film about a Chinese guy mentoring a picked on/out of place kid without ‘remaking’ Karate Kid?
All it would’ve required is the cutting of some of the no doubt horrible plays on the original movie (the fly catching scene for example) and possibly removing the tournament at the end. It also looks like they shoehorned some horrible prepubescent ‘relationship’ in there too. It doesn’t even look like he’s learning karate so much as that wire-fu matrix bullshit Jay hates so much.
Anyway, I did love the original, and don’t believe it really needed an update/reboot/whatever. If it was an original film I might have given it a chance. As it is though, I don’t think I will be bothering with this one.

Posted by wax off on December 23rd, 2009best line of 2010, im sure of it
willy, my problem is that after seeing that kid in The Day The Earth Stood Still, I wouldn’t see him in anything else.
Not unless they remake ID4 with the children of every cast member
Posted by Goon on December 23rd, 2009I have little interest, the interest I do have is Chan playing a role where he’s not smiling a lot or being goofy. And from the trailer it appears Chan is a bit grittier and dirtyer then we’ve seen him in some time, so I look forward to that, but this does scream “rental” at best.
Posted by jurassicalien on December 23rd, 2009reading the comments it seems the warm crystallizing effect of cock juice, i mean nostalgia has blinded most people from the fact that the original movie was a bucket of fermenting diarrhea. The only sin of this remake is that it reminded me of the original films.
Posted by sexirobot on December 23rd, 2009weak.
Posted by Soop on December 23rd, 2009I thought the trailer was good. I don’t know if I’d go catch this in theaters, definitely aimed towards kids, but I’d watch it on DVD I’m sure.
Posted by Captain N on December 23rd, 2009Will Smith’s kid looks like a fucking weed and he should win the Razzie for Worst Actor based on this trailer alone.
Jackie Chan amuses me. It looks like every day of the shoot he got out of bed and said “Fuck it.” Didn’t even bother to comb his hair.
And the soundtrack is shit compared to the original. Cruel Cruel Summer baby!
Posted by TheAllKnowingGod on December 23rd, 2009I’m fine with this being set in China, better than casting Jackie Chan to play a Japanese.
Posted by lucas 3d on December 24th, 2009I don’t know what’s goin to make you care for this kids plight – how old is he, 11? What are the stakes? – there’s goin to have to be some Triad story line that him and his mother get mixed up in to make us worry.
Otherwise who the fuck cares whether or not he keeps his lunch money (or is he gonna get his 10yr old girl? wtf)
Corn rows and his name is Dre – that is bullshit.
I dont see any legitimate way he can become anygood at Karate – too young.
Nostalgia really does not have much to do with how I feel about this trailer (I enjoyed the movie as a kid, but it’s not some sort of untouchable masterpiece). The movie just looks terrible and laughable.
And I totally agree with Goon:
my problem is that after seeing that kid in The Day The Earth Stood Still, I wouldn’t see him in anything else.
Amen to that!

Posted by stevie_baby on December 25th, 2009who ever doesnt think this seems great well lets see they are retards!!!Probably they could use different actors but i say this movie seems like a good movie and does think it sucks:Why come here in the first place??
Posted by Lolly on December 28th, 2009Why is this gonna be called “The Karate Kid” when he is being taught by a Chinese man?
Posted by Jayson on December 29th, 2009Cornrows? The kid looks like a douche. You’re not supposed to want the protagonist to actually get a beating.
Posted by Daniel-San on December 31st, 2009NOHEALANI you are a total TARD!
Your logic might make some sense if it were Jackie Chan training a little kid from America but it’s NOT!
He’s playing a CHARACTER in a movie. You understand this right??
How would you know that his character is trained in Kung Fu?! lol
That’s so ridiculous
Maybe this character is a chinese man, who at a young age moved to Japan where he was taught Karate.
Maybe as a boy he met an old Japanese man who taught him the art of Karate.
If I ever meet you in the streets Im gonna wax on and wax off upside your melon head.
Posted by Danno on January 3rd, 2010To Willy Jung Kim:
You’re a jackass. The movie doesn’t suck because Jaden Smith is black. It has nothing to do with that. Simply put, Jaden Smith is a shitty actor at best and this movie is another piss poor attempt by his father to turn him into a star. Any movie that this kid is in will suck. He has no talent and all of his daddy’s money will not change that. That and he comes off like a little bitch in public.
KeithTalent I agree with you, after seeing JS in The Day The Earth Stood Still I would not consider seeing any movie that he’s in.
Ralph Maccio must have puked in his mouth when he saw this trailer.

Posted by Danny shaughnessy on June 7th, 2010How come this thread is full of so many horribly written comments? The comments written by illiterate retards defending the movie make me not want to watch it even more. I know my grammar is not the best, but what the hell is this:
“keep your head up lil man u already got haters talk about u they just mad becuz they aint u and thay daddy aint will smith lol but u a good acter dont let nobody tell u u aint becuz they aint in no movies lol”
and this:
“who ever doesnt think this seems great well lets see they are retards!!!Probably they could use different actors but i say this movie seems like a good movie and does think it sucks:Why come here in the first place??”
this one too:
“fuck their mother who dont like this amazing trailer, i know than this movie is not going to be better than the another one but it will be a really good movie mother fuckers”

Posted by deLena on June 10th, 2010BuT, it’s only playing at 12:01 am in all the theaters in Phoenix, Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa,AZ.
What kind of sh_t is that?
This is the worst remake ever made. The only award it will ever win is a Razzie for worst actor (Jaden Smith). The producers must’ve been on crack when they decided to make this movie. It reminds me of all those idiots who think there’s no difference between Chinese and Japanese people or that they somehow speak the same language. It’s not karate. It’s kung fu. This film is a disgrace to martial artists of ALL disciplines. The reason Jaden Smith sucks is because he can’t act. Pat Morita must be rolling over in his grave.
Posted by truth hurts on June 11th, 2010YOU GUYS ARE OUT OF YOUR MIND TO BELIEVE THAT KARATE KID IS DUMB.IT”S A GREAT FILM UNDERSTAND THAT PLZ.
