No Topher Grace in Venom Spinoff?

venomnotopher

The much talked about Spider-Man 3 spinoff about the movie’s villain Venom, has yet to really materialize and everything about the project is still pretty unclear. I wouldn’t even be surprised if the movie never happens. But if it does, will Topher Grace then return as Venom? Not likely, as the actor doesn’t seem to have a clue about what is going on with the movie. When asked if he would like to return to take another turn as Venom, he gave the answer: “Um, I don’t know. I guess… I haven’t heard anything.” Very reassuring!

The answer, however, could mean several things (or nothing, really). 1. Grace, with his “I guess,” could be interested in taking on the role once again, but has not been asked to return, or 2. he has no idea about what’s going on at all. Most likely it’s the second option. Whatever happens, if the flick does go into production, I have full confidence that it’ll turn out awesome with the script by the two Zombieland writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese getting a rewrite by Gary Ross, who has previously written Seabiscuit. Three awesome writers should equal a good movie, right?

  1. he did fine as Venom in SM3. but i donno if he can carry a whole movie himself. as for the idea of a Venom spinoff, i’m not really that interested. it’s going to be spider-man but darker.

  2. Good. Grace was completely mis-cast as Brock/Venom.

  3. Topher was a terrible Venom.

  4. If there is a Venom movie it should be completely different and unrelated to SM3. Therefore they should cast someone a bit more appropriate than Tofu.

  5. Grace is a good actor, but was miscast as Eddie Brock. I thought the comics’ characterization was lost in the movie. They seemed to try to make him too much like Peter Parker. In the comics, he was much bigger than Spider-Man, which made him more physically imposing. Plus, Peter’s “spider-sense” couldn’t detect him, which took away another edge. And he learned Spider-Man was Peter through bonding with the Venom symbiote.
The movie had Brock as a photojournalist competing with Peter at the Daily Bugle, which added to their similarities. The comics version had Brock as a journalist who had a story revealing a killer’s identity disproved when Spider-Man captured the real killer.
I’d still prefer a larger, more imposing actor as Brock, but I suppose they might make Venom’s human host a different character altogether, so that may not matter. Plus, I don’t really care to see a standalone Venom movie anyway. The character was really designed to be the ultimate nemesis for Spider-Man, so I’m not interested in seeing him on his own.

  6. I have no real opinion concerning this. I just came here to say that that image made me spit-take my coffee.

  7. This is great news, Topher was the worst actor for Venom. Not only was he not big enough, and looked nothing like Eddie Brock, he also acted the part horribly.
