New To Theatres This Weekend: Avatar, Did You Hear About the Morgans?, Crazy Heart

moviesdec18_09

I think we all know what this weekend’s biggest theatrical release is. James Cameron’s Avatar has finally arrived! Will it live up to the hype, and more importantly… will it make its money back? There isn’t much competition. The only other major release this weekend is counter programming for the women out there who can’t stand fantasy and sci-fi: the Sarah Jessica Parker / Hugh Grant rom-com Did You Hear About The Morgans? Crazy Heart opens to critical acclaim on just a few screens, and the Rob Marshall musical Nine is in limited release this weekend before expanding on Christmas. Will you be seeing Avatar this weekend, or is there something else that strikes your fancy?

  1. “Crazy Heart opens to critical acclaim on just a few screens”

Is this a satirical prediction? :)

  2. Nope, it’s at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

  3. The Young Victoria is getting 4 stars and Blunt is an up and comer – awesome in Devil Wears Prada. I should see this back to back with Avatar, in 3D!

FilmJunk should do an Avatar post that will allow for spoilers as I already read something by one of your Aussie supporters I wish I hadn’t! It might be nice because I know I’ll want to post about it tonight!

The Navi chick is really a dude?

  5. “The Navi chick is really a dude?”

The Navi chick is Uhura from Star Trek, and she’s the best character in the movie.

  6. The reason I saw Avatar at midnight last night was not because I was ridiculously excited about it, but because it was a Christmas present from a friend…

so he shows up and we head to the theater, and we get tickets and start talking about the movie, and…

He thought we were going to see The Last Airbender, and had no idea what James Cameron’s Avatar was. And this guy works in the comics industry surrounded by nerds and spends hours a day on Twitter and Facebook, etc. He seriously didn’t know.

Funny enough the Last Airbender trailer played before the movie.

  7. Anyways, what I think Avatar does for this year is that it joins District 9 in crushing Michael Bay from the other end.

District 9’s low budget storytelling/concepts crush Michael Bay’s excess, and Cameron’s superior sense of excess and far superior attention to detail crush Bay on his own court.

  8. Cameron makes movies for his wives
When he was married to linda hamilton he did T1-2
Now that he is married to an average chick he makes movies like Avatar.

I went to see this movie with my girlfriend, at first she did not want to see it but i forced her to watch it..

    Big mistake..
She was crying and laughing out loud during the whole film.. Now she thinks this is her favorite film after Titanic.. She loved it.

My girlfriend walked out from District 9, Jurassic park, Vanilla Sky and DARK NIGHT!

    AVATAR IS A CHICKS MOVIE!

    I mean ok..
Visually it is superb.. NAvis are the best human like models i’ve ever seen on Big screen. (and i am a Cgi artist) But.. STill.. THEY do not LOOK 100% real.

Golum on the other hand in Lord of the rings might not was as well modeled as the NAVIS but it looks real because Jackson used Cgi Wisely, not nerdy.

I am not saying that Cameron uses them nerdy but he does not compromises his vision in todays technology he pushes the limits of cgi artists just because he had a fucking Vision. Screw u Cameron.

Guess what you have failed to create a 100% percent human like model.. Navis are at most 98% real. (this is a great insult in the cgi world)

Neil Blomkamp on the other hand GOON in case you haven’t noticed uses, in some few parts of the movie practical Models for the aliens. not CGi

The reason we do this is to convince and confuse the audience that what he is seeing is real.

Cameron is doing this with the big robots..
but he didn’t do it with the Navis.

Any how. to make the long story short.. The movie does look good but not 100% real like D-9 looks.

    Thats what am saying.
    Does this matters to me?
NO it does not… if the actual movie is good.

    BUT!

Avatar Story was brutal .. even cameron admits that.

I do hope the movie does good on the box office so that we can see a trilogy with a better story out of it.. but No i do not think this is a four star movie.

    I would give it a 3 or a 3.5 at most.. (OUT OF 5!! :)

    the story is SO retarded
THere is practically nothing i can say to TOmmy to spoil it!

except the (spoiler warning) usb-hair thing…

Oh and by the way Goon English is my native language not my mother tongue. I speak 3 languages, So until you learn how speak and write Greek you are not allowed to comment on my spelling skills..

And for my defense i would like to state that ”frase” was a Type ERROR not a real spelling mistake…

    Piss..

    ..i mean Peace out!

  9. “The Navi chick is really a dude?”

The Navi chick is Uhura from Star Trek, and she’s the best character in the movie.

I was only joking that it would a spoiler for Rus…or did I end up being right? lol!

I look forward to seeing Avatar regardless. It looks beautiful, has many Halo-esque elements to it, the whole idea of switching bodies is pretty intense….so yeah, I would like to see this.
