Voting Now Open for the 2009 Film Junk Reader’s Choice Awards!

Here you go, folks, it’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the fourth annual Film Junk Reader’s Choice Awards are now officially open for business! Once again we have divided up the year’s most notable movies by genre, and we are asking you to vote for your favourites in order to determine the best of the best for 2009.
While I’m sure you won’t all agree with some of the categories we have chosen, our goal was to highlight as many great movies as possible, while also keeping each category somewhat competitive. We also did our best to focus on movies that most people have had a chance to see this year, with the exception of the Indie and Foreign categories.
Feel free to point out any glaring omissions from the list of nominees in the comments below. Other than that, hurry up and get voting! The poll will remain open for the next two weeks, and we will announce the winners by the end of the month at the same time that we reveal our own Best of 2009 lists.

Adventureland is the best film of the year, but it’s hardly a comedy!!!
Posted by Rita on December 11th, 2009Thanks for including “Ponyo”, Sean.
@Rita, not all comedies need to be laugh-a-minute. Look at Woody Allen’s stuff. Er, not that “Adventureland” is of the same calibur, but I would say it was the best comedy this year.
Posted by Falsk on December 11th, 2009it’s a coming of age movie…only it was marketed as a comedy, because mottola’s previous one was a comedy, and because it’s supposed to sell more…
Posted by Rita on December 11th, 2009I didn’t feel at any moment it was a comedy
(It still got my vote in this poll. I’m glad it was included)
well, maybe with Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig’s appearances…
Posted by Rita on December 11th, 2009I’d say it’s at least as much of a comedy as Funny People is. But I don’t think either quite hold up as straightforward dramas either.
Posted by Sean on December 11th, 2009haven’t seen funny people…
Posted by Rita on December 11th, 2009but anyway, comedy has always been the most difficult genre to delimitate
wtf? You got rid of the write in catagories for biggest disappointment and best movie of the year. Why is this non-sense?
Posted by Drew on December 11th, 2009Foreign film category was quite weak. Haneke’s White Ribbon should be on there, for one. A Prophet as well. Thirst is very underpar for Chan-Wook, nothing to write home about. You guys should try to see Samuel Maoz’s Lebanon, one of the greatest war films. Ever. Seriously. Watch it.
Posted by AlexG on December 11th, 2009pretentious guy out
@Rita, true. Especially when you get into murky territory like “dramedies” (is it predominantly a comedy … or a drama!?)
I think the underlying point here, though, is that it was awesome.
Posted by Falsk on December 11th, 2009Re: foreign category
I’m pretty sure Sean only put up movies that had a chance to reach a larger audience already
Posted by Goon on December 11th, 2009why Forgetting sarah martial is not on the best comedy list? is it too old?
..hm… maybe it is..
I think you were too harsh on your MOON review.
it was an awesome movie and i am glad you put it atleast on your best indy film nominees
Posted by kyriakos on December 11th, 2009oh.. and as i own the title of the most good looking foreigner film junk listener i recommend ”The Prophet” for best foreign movie as well..
Posted by kyriakos on December 11th, 2009Forgetting Sarah Marshall came out in 2008
I hope being the most good looking listener makes up for your lack of memory
Posted by Goon on December 11th, 2009Despite the fact that the U.K. is “foreign” to you lot out there in the colonies, if the sublime Moon can make it into a best indie category, then the excellent In The Loop should find home in the best comedy?
Posted by DavidM on December 11th, 2009Drew: Unfortunately I had to use a different plug-in for the survey this year and it doesn’t allow for free form text entry fields. Otherwise I would have had at least one text field for Best Movie of the Year, if not more.
AlexG: Heard good things about Lebanon at TIFF but I don’t think it’s been released here yet. White Ribbon also doesn’t get a theatrical release in North America until December 30th I believe.
DavidM: Good point, I never thought of Moon as a foreign film, I guess because it stars Sam Rockwell. Either way, the comedy category was pretty full already, that’s really the only reason I threw In The Loop under foreign.
Posted by Sean on December 11th, 2009Why no overall best movie of the year category?
Posted by Nate on December 12th, 2009Why is Taken a nominee? That movie is from 2008, and not even late 2008, but actually very early.
Posted by aspioaokassodsøkasdkøl on December 12th, 2009Hey Sean, its obvious that you suck at photoshop, or atleast at cutting out pictures and making them fit in. First i thought you were in a hurry, but for a big event like this, you have proved your skill. And it’s not to offend you in any kind of way.
Posted by gayrasd on December 12th, 2009If you need photoshopping of something, i’ll gladely help you for free.
Why start the voting so early?
Posted by bullet3 on December 12th, 2009Shouldn’t you at least wait till its 2010, so all the movies have come out?
Nate: I didn’t want to pick just 5 nominees for Best Movie of the Year since there would be a lot of varying opinions on that. If I had more time to put it together I would have figured out a way to do the free form text entry for it.
aspioaokassodsøkasdkøl: Taken wasn’t released in North America until January 2009, believe it or not.
gayrasd: I like to think my lack of Photoshop skills are charming. Either way, if you send me your e-mail address and I will contact you next time I need a Photoshop collage of some sort.
bullet3: Most people seem to expect Year in Review type discussions to take place in December rather than January, but it might be an idea for next year to hold off another month.
Posted by Sean on December 12th, 2009I think bad photoshopping for this is way better than good photoshopping.
Sean, you are my main man.
Posted by Henrik on December 12th, 2009#Sean, my email is: Captain_gray93@hotmail.com ( the name is stupid, yes, but i was 13 at that time)
Posted by gaysad on December 13th, 2009we should really talk about Crowdsourcing a film junk short
Posted by rus in chicago on December 13th, 2009It says that i can leave an answer blank if i havn’t seen any of the movies in the question, but when i answer it says that i can’t answer because i have left one or more blank. What do i do?
Posted by omfsa on December 13th, 2009I thought Parnassus was not even out yet? I saw it at the film festival and it is one of my favourite films of the year, but I imagine it will not do well in the poll if nobody has seen it.
Anyway, everything else I had a pretty obvious choice, though as mentioned i would have preferred a more robust selection of foreign films.
Posted by KeithTalent on December 13th, 2009how come Gomorrah and The Class were in this years? I saw them both last year! Or were they only released this year for you guys? i preferred The Class to Gomorrah but they are very different films and hard to compare
