Transylmania Sets Record for Lowest-Grossing Semi-Wide Release Ever

Last year we saw the animated flop Delgo set a new record for lowest grossing movie opening in wide release ever. It wasn’t a big surprise considering the lack of marketing and the fact that the movie was produced independently, but still, not something to brag about either. Fast-forward to a year later, and over this past weekend we saw another similar box office record broken by the tepid horror spoof Transylmania. I guess it just goes to show that if you don’t put “Movie” in the title, your spoof just ain’t gonna sell.

According to Box Office Mojo, Transylmania scored the lowest-grossing opening weekend for any movie playing in over 1,000 theatres with just $263,941. The previous record was held by the 1991 comedy Rich Girl (directed by the same guy responsible for Karla). Transylmania’s per screen average was a lowly $262. Ouch. Unfortunately I think the writing was on the wall. When the similarly-themed Stan Helsing went direct-to-DVD earlier this year, Transylmania should have followed suit. At least Stan Helsing had Leslie Nielsen!

  1. I didn’t know it was a spoof, so yes they failed

  2. Odd. Apparently it’s a sequel to a direct to DVD National Lampoon film that I also never heard of.

  3. Yeah, this is Dorm Daze 3 under a new name to try and make more money. Never saw Dorm Daze 2 but I did see the first when it originally came out.

  4. This got into 1000 theaters? Wow. Beauty Day should have no problem getting at least that.

  5. The guys that made this were on the Adam Corolla Podcast talking about how they secured the funds to make this movie. It cost them 15 million alone just to get the movie into 1500 theaters. They were pretty confident that they were going to make a ton of money with this, I’m kind of glad to see it blow up in their faces.
