Raaaaaaaandy Feature Film Among New Apatow Projects in Development

Hot on the heels of the DVD release of Judd Apatow’s Funny People this week comes an announcement about a spin-off movie based on one of the characters in the film. Previously we had heard Apatow joking about the possibility of a feature film based on Aziz Ansari’s character Raaaaaaaandy, an obnoxious, Dane Cook-esque stand up comedian. Now it appears that this is no longer a joke and it is moving forward with both Judd Apatow and Universal Pictures backing the project.
According to Variety, the Raaaaaaaandy movie is one of three potential projects that Aziz Ansari and his Human Giant cohort Jason Woliner pitched to Apatow. He ended up picking up all three of them. The other two films are Let’s Do This, a “road movie about two guys who work for a motivational speaking company”, and an untitled comedy where Ansari would play a disgraced cosmonaut who must “return to outer space to clear his name”. Clearly Ansari’s career is taking off, and Woliner is looking to make the jump from directing TV to movies. Are you a fan of Aziz Ansari, and could a feature-length Raaaaaaaandy movie actually work?

I hope this works, I’ve quoted his viral site material almost as much as the Simpsons.

Posted by Sean on November 24th, 2009I liked the Raaaaaandy web shots as much as the next guy, but a whole movie seems overkill and will probably suck just like every movie based off a skit. As for the other movies, apparently he’s taking script advice from Adam Sandler.
Posted by Justice on November 24th, 2009movie is probably overkill, but i watched the “documentary” on the Funny People features disc and enjoyed it quite a bit.
It’s really pathetic though that Aziz’s riff on obnoxious comedy is still better than Jeff Millionaire Dunham’s puppet show of suck.
Posted by Goon on November 25th, 2009I love the Raaaaaaaandy documentary and plan on buying the Funny People DVD especially for that but I have my doubts on a feature-length project. Still, I’m in if that can give me new lines to quote!
