The Hangover Launches Award Campaign for Best Picture?

With the end of the year approaching, we can expect to see a lot of the Oscar campaigns kicking into high gear as the various studios try to ensure that their prestige films are getting noticed by the Academy. These campaigns often include ads in industry publications such as Variety using the phrase “For Your Consideration”, along with the various award categories they are bidding for. It may seem weird that marketing campaigns play a role in the Oscars, but hey, it’s Hollywood. Anyway, imagine my surprise when I visited the Variety website this morning only to find a giant pop-up ad for The Hangover staring back at me!
As you can see, the ad reads “For Your Consideration In All Categories” including “Best Picture”. My first thought was that they can’t possibly be serious, and that this must be a clever viral marketing ploy to promote The Hangover DVD coming out next month. It turns out that’s not entirely true. As Alex over at First Showing points out, it also says “Comedy or Musical” in small letters beneath Best Picture, which means this is actually an ad for the Golden Globes, which The Hangover could very well get nominated for. I suppose that makes a little more sense. What do you think, was The Hangover the best comedy or musical of the year? And would this ad have been a lot cooler if it actually was a joke?
On a related note, TMZ has a handful of photos that were cut from the closing credits of The Hangover. Worth checking out!

i’m not even sure about this getting nominated for a Golden Globe. a lot of the jokes, the chinese mafia leader for example, fell flat for me.
but then again, there haven’t been a lot of good comedies this year. so who knows it might just scoop a nomination.
Posted by Napalm on November 23rd, 2009I didn’t laugh once in that movie.
Posted by aspioaokassodsøkasdkøl on November 23rd, 2009The whole chinese mafia thing was so bad, and so Adam Sandler like. To all people who hate Sandler, Owen, Stiller, Ferrel and those guys, and liked this movie: go fuck yourself.
The whole chinese mafia was even worse humour then the one Sandler and co. does. The same with rest of the humour throughout the movie. The only reason why The Hangover gets so much credits, is because it has unknown comedic actors…
This movie is an instant classic! I laughed harder, louder, and longer (”sounds like a porn title”)than I did when watching Anchorman. I can’t wait for it to come out on Blueray as I’m looking forward to the special features.
Hopefully it’ll win best comedy!
Posted by Marc on November 23rd, 2009Well, there are going to be 10 nominees for BEST PICTURE this year. That’s right…twice the normal amount. So in a year without many buzz films, I wouldn’t be surprised to see something like this nominated. There’s a huge campaign to get MJ’s THIS IS IT a Best picture nod, too.
Posted by Tony on November 23rd, 2009“The Hangover” was one of my least favorite films of the year. I think I recall Jay suggesting he liked “Land of the Lost” more, and I’d agree whole-heartedly.
No one will have the globes to nominate it, but in my opinion, best comedy should go to “Drag Me to Hell.”

And please, please don’t give me the whole ” it was meant to be like that” shit. I know it was. I still found it really bad.
It was meant to be like that.
