Monday Morning Box Office Report: New Moon Has Third-Highest Opening Weekend Ever

Fanboys can breathe a sigh of relief… The Dark Knight managed to hold on to its opening weekend box office record, even though The Twilight Saga: New Moon still had an absolutely massive debut, taking in $141 million, more than doubling the totals for the first Twilight film. New Moon jumped to the #3 spot on the all-time opening weekend list, just behind Spider-Man 3, but it did break the records for opening day gross and midnight showings, which proves just how dedicated fans of this franchise are. The Blind Side also had a surprisingly strong opening, setting a record for sports dramas, and proving that Sandra Bullock still has a lot of box office pull. Roland Emmerich’s 2012 fell to the #3 spot, while Planet 51 and A Christmas Carol rounded out the top 5.
1. The Twilight Saga: New Moon — $141M
2. The Blind Side — $34.5M
3. 2012 — $26.5M
4. Planet 51 — $12.6M
5. A Christmas Carol — $12.2M
6. Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire — $11M
7. The Men Who Stare at Goats — $2.77M
8. Couples Retreat — $1.95M
9. The Fourth Kind — $1.73M
10. Law Abiding Citizen — $1.61M

Posted by Napalm on November 23rd, 2009Studio’s laughing all the way to the bank with that one. And the more depressing thing is that the next 2 books (yes I’ve read them) are even worse than Twilight/New Moon and their movies will still break box office records.

Posted by jaime on November 23rd, 2009@Matt Keith: I agree. I often get annoyed when bad movies make shit-tons of money, but when I think about it, that’s how it always goes. It’s not going to change and I can’t do anything about it, so I just have to accept it.
