Weekly Poll Results: Best Female Action Star

Well I have to admit, I’m a little surprised by the results of last week’s poll. Although Angelina Jolie has probably starred in the most high-profile female action roles over the past few years, I really didn’t think she would top Milla Jovovich as the number 1 female action star currently working today. As it turns out, Film Junk readers voted Jolie #1 and Jovovich #2, although they weren’t all that far apart. The next closest vote-getter was Uma Thurman, followed by Kate Beckinsale and a two-way tie between Summer Glau and Zoe Bell. Asian action stars apparently don’t cut it for FJ readers, but I honestly thought Chocolate star Yanin Vismistananda would get a little more love from the hardcore martial arts fans. Do you agree with these results? Would the addition of any other names have changed the outcome of this poll?
1. Angelina Jolie — 23.6%
2. Milla Jovovich — 20.9%
3. Uma Thurman — 16.0%
4. Kate Beckinsale — 9.7%
5. Summer Glau — 9.2%
5. Zoe Bell — 9.2%
7. Rhona Mitra — 4.5%
8. Michelle Yeoh — 3.9%
9. Lucy Liu — 2.4%
10. Yanin Vismistananda — 0.8%

The fact that you had a picture of Angelina above the poll might have boosted her votes
(Voted for Milla Jovovich myself)
Posted by Niklas on November 19th, 2009i agree.
Posted by blackmothra on November 19th, 2009in most polls i think the one pictured is usually the winner.
You could be right. I do usually try to pick a neutral image for the poll itself, but I hadn’t considered that it could actually be such a strong influencer.
Posted by Sean on November 19th, 2009That’s an interesting point that Niklas has. Someone should go back through all the Film Junk Polls over the years and see if there’s any validity to Niklas’ hypothesis. There may even be a correlation with who / what gets listed at the top of the list choices.
Posted by Reed Farrington on November 19th, 2009I think this poll just indicates how weak the “female action movie star” field is right now. Not that it was ever really strong historically but after the first two, it really drops off. Uma is only known for the Kill Bills as an action actress, and she hasn’t done anything action-oriented since then. Kate B. is actually pretty diverse with the action. She’s mostly known for Underworld, but has also done Van Helsing, and that Antarctica movie that was in the theaters for 2 hours I guess is action. But of the 10, I guess only Bell, Mitra, Yeoh and Yanin could be said to be best known for action and action only.

even the last 20 dont show anything conclusive

Posted by blackmothra on November 19th, 2009No mention of Sigourney Weaver at all?? I’d say she at least deserves an honorable mention for the Alien films.

Posted by Swarez on November 19th, 2009People clearly need to see more action movies featuring a female lead if Angelina Jolie is at the top.

Posted by blackmothra on November 19th, 2009No offense to Milla Jovovich but Angieline Jolie can take her down just by raising a single eyebrow a la Mr. Spock. End of discussion.

Posted by finaljoe on November 20th, 2009Many actors and actresses would not regard an action film as a serious piece of work. We are fortunate then when high-profile actresses seem happy to work in the action film genre. Angelina Jolie is not young but she is still energetic enough to commit herself to action roles. Good for her. And to all other actresses on the list. I’d recommend Brigitte Lin and Yaukari Oshima, even though they made their films years ago.
Posted by Pantagruella on December 13th, 2009Pantagruella, I’ve never understood the fascination many people have with Brigitte Lin. There’s a rumour that she’s coming out of retirement for Wong Kar-wai’s Bruce Lee biopic, “The Grand Master,” but I suspect she won’t be doing much action in it.
On the topic of “The Grand Master” that recently began shooting, I’m absolutely in heaven that three of my favourite subjects have been brought together for this movie: Wong Kar-wai, Bruce Lee, and Ziyi Zhang! Thank Buddha that I have a reason to keep on living.
