None of his novels were in print when he died in 1977. He is probably best known for his novel "The Getaway," which was adapted by Walter Hill for the Sam Peckinpah film. Despite the success of "The Getaway," other Thompson novels (masterpieces) "Pop. 1280," and "The killer inside me," failed to make much of an impact. I should say at this point that "Pop. 1280," was a French film and more than likely did very well there. Just as it was France's interest in American film noir that was largely responsible for it's resurgence, and its influence on The French New Wave, which in turn informed the style of the Auteur period of 70's film making, Thompson's novels are widely available today. "The killer inside me," was made into a movie in 1976 starring Stacy Keach. While I have only seen a trailer for this one (coming to my mailbox soon courtesy of Netflix) Stacy Keach makes for a very menacing Lou Ford. While Casey Affleck has excelled at playing weasel-like characters I am wondering if he has the imposing physical presence and maturity to play Lou Ford? In fairness Lou Ford in the novel was only 29. Although a 29 year old man in the South in 1952 was quite a different animal I think than the Manbaby twentysomethings of today.
