Film Junk Poll: What is Your Favourite Jim Carrey Movie?

pollbestjimcarrey

I still remember my first introduction to Jim Carrey as the sole white guy on the hilarious Wayans Brothers show In Living Color back in the early ’90s. It was pretty obvious that he was going to be a big star even then, but he managed to jump to the top of the Hollywood A-list quickly with a series of very funny films. Eventually he even managed to branch out with some acclaimed dramatic performances as well.

With the release of A Christmas Carol this weekend, I was thinking it might be worth looking back at the man’s filmography and everything he has done to date. There are definitely some classics in there (and a few duds too), but what is your all-time favourite Jim Carrey flick? Is he still funny nowadays, and do you buy him as a serious actor? Cast your vote in the poll below and feel free to discuss his career further in the comments section.

  1. Lloyd Christmas is by far the best

  2. Nothing beats nostalgia. I have to go with Dumb & Dumber.

  3. How ridiculous. It’s like saying ‘what was your favourite dump ?’. I abstain.

  4. i think he’s a bit overrated as a serious actor, particularly on truman show. if you can act decently and be a comedian at the same time it’s so much more awesome, apparently.
i know eternal sunshine will come out on top and there are lots of fanboys for it, but the subconscious parts work better for me than the parts where frodo’s trying to get his brain to work or something.

  5. Where is “None of the Above”?

war crime tribunals are funnier than Carrey

  6. Hey I’ll admit that nowadays Jim Carrey’s comedy does very little for me, but back in the days of Ace Ventura and Dumb & Dumber, he was pretty cutting edge.

  7. Sean is right. His comedy was cutting edge even when the movies he was in weren’t that good. And then he’s done something that many “A-list” actors never do: evolve and take risks.

And it is commendable that he can be a successful comedian first and then become a good dramatic actor. You know why? Because most serious actors can’t reverse that and do comedies well. Doing both comedy and drama well is hard to do. I think he is a great actor who chooses shitty projects more than he should.

But my favorite movies of his aren’t comedies. They are “Man in the Moon” (about a comedian but not a comedy) and “Eternal Sunshine …” and I like them because they are good films with good directors who know how to get great performances out of actors like Carrey.

  8. Jim Carrey made 2 maybe 3 good movie’s.(maybe)

  9. Eternal Sunshine is probably my favorite on the list but Dumb and Dumber is more Careyesque … I guess. Truman show was also good though I liked the anime version better since it had giant robots.

  10. I can’t believe why so many people voted for Eternal Sunshine. He never was himself there! Jim Carrey plays himself best in Dumb & Dumber and Ave Ventura.

  11. I love the Cable Guy. Wanna fight about it? lets go!

  12. “I can’t believe why so many people voted for Eternal Sunshine. He never was himself there! Jim Carrey plays himself best in Dumb & Dumber and Ave Ventura.”

-do you know Jim Carey personally? do you know what acting is?

  13. Well I too am one of the apparent dumbasses that voted for ESOTSM. It’s inclusion in the list really skews the result I think. Much of what I love about the film has less to do with Carrey. It was every bit as much a Kate Winslet movie but really more to the point it is a Charlie Kaufman movie. I thought Carrey was good in it. There are few actors working who are able to exude sympathy. You could superimpose his face over calendar photos of puppies. There really isn’t a movie on the list that I would say was “Shit!” Some better than others sure. I don’t know why people love Crucifixions but they do.

  14. I would like to qualify my last statement in saying that this version of “A Christmas Carrol,” does look like “Shit!” again, not really anything to do with Jim Carrey, it is just this ascetic I can’t stand. I wish it would go away. I don’t care how good they get at it I just don’t want to see it. “Polar Express,” was “Shit!” and this will be too.
