Sony Acquires Rights to a Risk Movie

Yep, you read it right… the game of global domination is coming to the big screen. Apparently Universal isn’t the only studio getting into the business of making movies based on board games. Sony Pictures announced today via their Twitter account that they had “acquired motion picture rights to classic board game RISK”. No other details were made available at this time, but it is a Hasbro property, which means that Sony probably stole it away from Universal, who signed a 6-year strategic partnership deal with Hasbro earlier this year. (They are currently developing movies based on Monopoly, Candy Land, and Battleship, among others.) Perhaps the rights were still owned by the estate of French film director Albert Lamorisse, who invented the game back in 1957?
At any rate, I’m wondering if Sony actually ended up scoring the game with the most cinematic potential of the bunch here. I mean, sure there aren’t any characters associated with the game, but the possibilities are endless for a generic war movie — especially one that delves into the strategic elements of planning a campaign. It will still require a writer and director with a bit of talent to make it worthwhile, but somehow it seems like less of a stretch than most of these other board game movies. I know one thing… Risk has a pretty hardcore following among the geek crowd, so at least they’ve got that going for them. Feel free to debate the potential brilliance and/or insanity of a Risk movie in the comments below.

I can’t wait for the movie version of Settlers of Catan.

Posted by Scott on November 4th, 2009I agree sean, they could make a good generic war movie using the risk name, but that’s what I don’t get about these board game movies. If you wanted to make a war movie, make your own original war movie you don’t have pay for a license.
There is really nothing about risk that is identifiable or iconic other than the fact that it is a fun board game that has been around for awhile. I mean there is not even an identifiable risk character like the monopoly guy, but just a bunch of generic 19th century soldier figures. They might as well make “Napoleonic wars: The movie.”
Posted by Matt on November 4th, 2009This could be very fun and interesting if given to someone creative.
Posted by Captain N on November 4th, 2009I’m going to laugh my ass off if the first of these board game movies bombs and the studio people start kicking themselves for buying the rights to every boardgame under the sun.
Posted by MJS on November 4th, 2009I want a feature length UNO

Posted by Big Hungry on November 5th, 2009But Go Fish and Uno are brilliant slams!
I still wonder how they will pull these off.
“Snakes and Ladders on a Plane”
Posted by Glen on November 5th, 2009It will be awesome if it’s just about people playing Risk on a Saturday night.
Posted by sacasam-master on November 5th, 2009Seeing how the Clue movie was reasonably good…
Posted by Rodlen on November 8th, 2009I think it can be done and well. Picture a futuristic version of the game. Where the players actually control real troops. Two story lines and multiple sets of protagonists and antagonists. The players being one set and the troops being the next.
Or simply using the game as a training tool for stratigists. With most of the movie reflecting on futility of war.
yet another, using the game as a new military weapon. Plenty of CGI with the use of robotic armies and troops to wage actual war.
There alot of posibilities here. In addition to alot of fans of the game to please. Tough bill to fill but I’m looking foward to this more than candyland or monopoly. lol
