Fox Searchlight Reins in Release Plans for Gentlemen Broncos

Things aren’t looking so good for Jared Hess’ latest comedy Gentlemen Broncos. The movie hit theatres last week on just 2 screens, and despite plans to expand further in the coming weeks, it appears that the movie’s release is now being scaled back as a result of bad reviews. A number of critics have received a notice this week from Fox Searchlight stating that the movie will no longer be opening in their market. It is unclear if they will still follow through with the previously scheduled roll out for the next two weeks, but it certainly won’t be progressing beyond that. DVD will likely be the venue for most of us to see it.
Truth be told, there were signs of trouble when the movie premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin back in September; it received a wave of negative reviews and was quickly forgotten. Now it seems that Fox Searchlight is hoping that it will stay forgotten. (As pointed out by Get The Big Picture, 2009 hasn’t been kind to Fox Searchlight, which hurts even more because this is the same studio who put out Slumdog Millionaire and The Wrestler last year.) Still, I can’t help but want to witness Gentlemen Broncos with my own eyes. Hess has always been a bit of an acquired taste, and most people will tell you that Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre only get better with repeat viewings. Plus I refuse to believe that anything starring Jemaine Clement can be all bad. Has anyone out there seen Gentlemen Broncos yet? Are you surprised by this news?

I have seen the screening of this movie, and to be honest I was surprised that I enjoyed it a lot, that I am now waiting for it to get released nationally, so I can watch it again. I’m so disappointed to hear that Fox Searchlight is cancelling the national release! They should’ve released this nationally on Oct. 30 and people would go and watch excitedly. Instead of having to wait then reading other peoples’ reviews that don’t mean shit!!!
Posted by Jeremy on November 4th, 2009The only time Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre get better is when they are in the trash and forgotten about because they are both terrible terrible movies. The cast of Gentlemen Broncos did look a bit promising, especially my favorite Sam Rockwell, but by the looks of it, its just another shit movie from Jared Hess. Too many other good movies to watch to waste my time on him.
Posted by Justice on November 4th, 2009WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH AUDIENCES! that trailer looked really promising, they are releasing The Fantastic Mr. Fox – it can’t be any more “acquired taste” than that. This just ruined my day, my week, MY FALL!
Posted by rus in chicago on November 4th, 2009I expected its over-the-top quirk would divide audiences, but I’m surprised that the reaction has been this negative. Kind of like Southland Tales, it has piqued my interest in seeing it all the more, but with much lower expectations that may not even be met.
Posted by Goon on November 4th, 2009Saw this at Fantastic Fest and I can understand all the hate. The problem with the film is that there is nothing fresh or new in it, especially if you have seen Hess’s other films. The guy really needs to try something else. The whole movie is like a check list of everything he’s done before. Plus it’s not that funny.
Rockwell and Clement are pretty good in it though.
Have to point out that I really like Napoleon Dynamite and I think Nacho Libre is pretty good as well.
It did however have a scene that I’m sure has never been put on film before. An albino constrictor having projectile diarrhea over a dude.
Posted by Swarez on November 4th, 2009Ha, I am not surprised. It just looked like an odd terrible rip off of Big Fat Liar with terrible timing and no entertainment value unless you are uneducated and enjoy that kind of humor. Why waste my time on a stupid Jared Hess movie.
Posted by NotSurprised on November 4th, 2009this movie is filled with disgusting animal violence and i really suspect the writers must be mentally ill, closet serial killers if they think its funny to kill cats.
