It would be gimmick casting in the same way as the rumors of getting Elijah Wood to play Bilbo or Ian Holm to play Bilbo. It’s going to be an ensemble cast to play the dwarves. Remember that unlike LotR, Gandalf is the only human size character among the group of heroes. So there’s going to be a ton of makeup work for all those dwarves and whoever is playing Bilbo. That dynamic is going to make the appeal of the Hobbit a bit different than LotR. For example, no handsome leading men to draw the ladies in. Also no female characters either.

# Yes, and he actually cried at the end of the shootin in LOTR 3, when they burned Gimlis helmet. This because he was so happy to have been through the hell that he said he was.
I don’t really see this as a problem. It’s not a big deal, and actually more logical that someone else plays Gimlis father. With all the make up and stuff, it really doesn’t matter anywhays.

If I remember correctly, John Rhys-Davies had an allergic reaction to his prosthetic make-up throughout the entire production of LotR.
