James Cameron’s Avatar Theatrical Trailer in HD
![]()
The new trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar has been out in theatres for a week or so now, but it has finally debuted online today in HD over at Yahoo!. This comes hot on the heels of recent accusations against James Cameron that he may have stolen some of the ideas for Avatar from a 1957 short story by Poul Anderson entitled Call Me Joe. Fortunately for Cameron, this new trailer is a huge improvement over the initial teaser trailer, and is likely going to be impressive enough to erase any of these thoughts of plagiarism from people’s minds.
This three and a half minute clip provides a lot more context for what is going on in the film, including who the Na’vi are, why the military is interested in them, and what Sam Worthington’s back story is. However, it certainly reinforces the fact that most of the action will be 100% CG animation (albeit very high quality CG animation) while it remains to be seen just how much more thrilling the 3-D viewing experience will be. What do you think, does this new trailer change your mind about the film? Check out an embedded version after the jump.

Trailer not available in my location. Boo!!!
Posted by Stepen on October 29th, 2009Looks fucking epic! Can’t wait for it.
Posted by Jeremy on October 29th, 2009Now THAT’s what I was hoping for in the first place!! Great!
Posted by SirPrize on October 29th, 2009This looks much better. Really looking forward to it.
Posted by The Het on October 29th, 2009I wasn’t impressed with the first trailer, but this one is a lot more detailed and looks more exciting!
Posted by Chris on October 29th, 2009Naturally the effects look outstanding, but story wise it still looks as trite, cliched, melodramatic, heavy-handed, anachronistic, and preachy as it came across in the script treatment.
I’ll be skipping this because it would just make me angry to sit through it. Dances with Wolves in space indeed.
Posted by Damndirtyape on October 29th, 2009That wasn’t a trailer, that was a fucking movie cut into a short fucking movie!
Posted by Gaylord! on October 29th, 2009I agree with reply #7. It’s not a trailer, it’s a short version of the movie. No need to see it now, I’ve seen 2h+ of the actual storyline already in the above trailer.
Posted by Othello on October 29th, 2009Yes and I think that’s why people are responding to this new trailer… because it tells a story. Most good trailers do. Personally, I don’t think it gives too much away either.
Posted by Sean on October 29th, 2009I agree with poster number 6, the story does look rather cheesy. Effects are great though.
Posted by RaphNL on October 29th, 2009@Sean
I agree with you but I still feel the graphics look still very CG but they are better than most CG I have seen. But if the story is good in the end, I will like it even if the graphic do not deliver as James Cameron said they would. This trailer is much better than the first!
Posted by Big Hungry on October 29th, 2009@RaphNL: Pretty much EVERY sci-fi film looks cheesy compared to your avatar pic.. nice choice – it’s my favorite Sci-Fi film/tranquilizer of all time.
Posted by Damndirtyape on October 29th, 2009I´m sorry I ever doubted you, Cameron..
Posted by pcch7 on October 29th, 2009All the effects look great except the Na’vi. Why didn’t they do them as man in suit? I’m distracted by how Pixary they look.
Posted by G on October 29th, 2009uh… didn’t really care for it.
Posted by Goon on October 29th, 2009Goon – Agree with you.
This looks like a little bit of Aliens combined with the ever popular family friendly CG we all know and love. It has been 12 years…
Posted by John on October 29th, 2009actually it strikes me as a CGI version of Dances with Wolves or Last Samurai
Posted by Goon on October 29th, 2009Still think this movie will Tank!
Posted by jaime on October 29th, 2009I got jizz all over the monitor. This looks EPIC! People really need to stop being so overcritical. It’s no war drama, it’s a summer movie. Just go out, have fun and enjoy it.
Posted by Napalm on October 29th, 2009the guy never totally fails. it will come down to how much the audience relates to the CG Na’vi which is a big task. we are talking about multiple Jar Jars and Gollums relating to each other and making us care! I like the depth and sparkle in their faces but their eyes look very lifeless. Not surprising as the eyes are the windows to the soul and the hardest thing to conquer/render. I predict the story will be predictable but so is Star Wars…maybe the movie can cause a sensation like dare I say….no I can’t say it, its blasphemy!
Posted by rus in chicago on October 30th, 2009I think the CG characters look VERY lifelike. I was actually surprised at how they managed to pull of the little facial movements, when they spoke during the trailer.
Posted by Napalm on October 30th, 2009..
I don’t know, maybe this movie will not be as great as we anticipated it to be, but
whoever judge it from now about the special effects is a major douchebag This movie will surely have the best visual effects ever put to a movie (technologically speaking) its a james cameron movie for god sakes.. a director that never fails and his last 3 movies were pure awesomeness if you compare them with most actionbayshit we were forced to watch the last couple of years, the least we can do is give him a little bit of credit here.
I saw the first trailer on the theater and i am way satisfied. i don’t wanna watch any spoilers so i will not see this one. I really don’t get it why people always want to know exactly what is about in order to go watch a movie…
Really go suck a dirty cock and go kill yourself.
Peace.
Posted by kyriacos on October 30th, 2009NO SEAN. A good trailer doesn’t give us a story. The fucking story in the trailer is the same as in the movie, and what’s the point of seeing the movie then, when we know how the movie will turn out to be storywise? This trailer did that!
Posted by Gay sad on October 30th, 2009A trailer is not good, but bad when it does that.
I’m not advocating spoilers in trailers, but do you really feel like you know all of the plot twists from this trailer? I feel that a good trailer should be like a short film… there’s an art to it.
Posted by Sean on October 30th, 2009Trailers are not art, they are advertisement. It’s about giving us the best feeling to go watch the movie, and i feel this didn’t since i kinda saw the whole movie in shortened.
Posted by Gaylord! on October 30th, 2009Seems like it starts off with a premise borrowed from Cameron’s “Aliens”. A bunch of Marines (what is it with Cameron and Marines?) go to some distant planet in search of something that has great value (substitute alien weaponry with the mineral as the McGuffin) to the bureaucratic suit type character (swap Paul Reiser with Giovanni Ribisi). Hell, Sigourney Weaver is in this movie, how obvious is the “Alien(s)” connection? Of course it goes off on a totally different tangent, but I’m intrigued enough to go watch it, just to see the whole movie and how the FX look in its entirety.
Posted by Maopheus on October 30th, 2009I agree and disagree w/ Sean. A trailer can be effective advertisement and art like the original Alien trailer, but most are not. In the good trailer, like Alien, the filmmakers capture the mood of the film and not so much of the story. I think the filmmakers here overreacted to some of the negative comments from the first teaser and chose to give away to much in this trailer. The movie is soooooo expensive they probably felt they needed to do damage control and take back the conversation. I don’t ness. blame them, but i was going to see it anyway, now I’m back to seeing it opening night!
Posted by rus in chicago on October 30th, 2009the music.. is that the music from the end of “The Island”.. I know I´ve heard it somewhere..
Posted by pcch7 on October 30th, 2009This looks awesome. Can’t wait!
Posted by MalD on October 30th, 2009i wouldve preferred the trailer to have less storytelling and a bit more thumping new age muzak over masterfully edited montages of love, loss, and beautiful creatures doing stupid shit.
one gripe: not enough grime. this looks too clean.
Posted by that motherfucker from vancouver on October 31st, 2009I think it will be a fun film based on what I have seen, but the story seems like a very tired retread. At least make them ugly, horrible creatures. Would Sam Worthington’s character be so quick to help them then. Is the principle not to interfere because you are stronger or not to interfere with peaceful, sexy blue aliens because you are stronger?
Posted by Patrick H. on October 31st, 2009Fox advertised that they were going to be showing I’m guessing the same trailer at the new Dallas football stadium tonight on their giganto HD screens. Man, they are really going hog wild on this movie.
Posted by Maopheus on November 1st, 2009I’m not feeling the trailer at all. However, I thought the detail of the Na’vi animation was excellent. My guess is they’re trying to make the story seem as broad as possible with the trailer in order to market it to as a many people as possible, which to me only makes it look cheesy. However, Titanic is cheesy and I think that movie is awesome (including the first half). My guess is the story will have more curve-balls than this trailer lets on to.
Posted by Glendon on November 1st, 2009It seems the more serious they try to make this movie look, the cheesier it comes across. I’m not sure Cameron’s storytelling approach is very current or original anymore. This looks steeped in the epic, action movie cliches that he helped establish over 20 years ago but it comes off as tired and almost satirical by today’s standards.
Posted by Nuno on November 1st, 2009I liked the first trailer better. It annoys me that I now know the entire story. It’s further enhancing the concept that talk is nothing, visuals are everything, because literally all that is going to be talked about is spoiled here, now you can look forward to the pictures without worrying about the context.
But the pictures do look amazing. This looks on par with Star Wars and Hellboy 2 in terms of an interesting new universe.
Posted by Henrik on November 2nd, 2009im sure this trailor isnt actually giving away the entire movie. but rather just a synopsis of things to come. When it comes out and blows everyone away you’ll all be eating your words!!!!
