I personally liked the movie, thought it was great. I didn’t go into this movie comparing it with the original even though when I did watch it, inevitably compared it and I enjoyed it. Smokin’ Aces 2 is everything I would have expected from this type of movie, there was a ton of guns, scenes of delicious blood and gore, skin might I add… I didn’t go into the movie believing the negative responses until i saw it myself, and was delightfully surprised.

Smoking Aces isn’t a Guy Richie rip-off, it isn’t a good enough film to be that. When I think of over-the-top gun-porn scenes I don’t immediately think of Guy Richie. That is more John Woo’s mantle, usurped perhaps by a Robert Rodriguez? When I think of highly stylized-call attention to itself-technique, Gang O’ loveable thug films that have been able to build something on its own outside of the House that Tarrantino built, I think of Guy Richie. There is by comparison very little actual gunfire in his films. Swirling the camera around until you get nauseated while fifteen guys blast machine guns in small confines until all would have been deafened or asphyxiated is not what he does. “Smoking Aces,” certainly benefited from the built in audience created by better films. That is not to say I didn’t enjoy watching it for what it was and will most likely do so again, but it certainly didn’t creatively crave out any new territory.

I liked the beginning of Smoking Aces with the intro of some of the characters, but it was all downhill from there and then driven 6 feet under with that horribly forced ending with with Ryan Reynolds.

Carnahan’s sense of fun by having a kid on prescription drugs and poorly executed shoot-out out of the elevator was just plain bad. His use of smoke was pretty amateur and I hope to see none of that again. Piven in a pretty embarassing role where he does a lame card trick to show he is a magician was bad.

Trying to think what I really liked about it. Common’s performance was good. Honestly, with a new director on-board it isn’t unfortunate. At least it wont try to be a 3rd rate Tarantino-type film-making. This time, the film is aware of what it is and that is straight to dvd.

Smoking Aces was great time spent. Fun and exciting.
