Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassin’s Ball Trailer Starring Vinnie Jones

I still haven’t seen Joe Carnahan’s Smokin’ Aces, but the high energy hitman flick it seems to have a fair amount of fans out there. (Personally I always thought it looked like a Guy Ritchie knockoff, but maybe I’m wrong on that.) At any rate, the film was apparently popular enough to warrant a direct-to-DVD sequel… er, I mean, prequel. Joe Carnahan obviously has better things to do with his time (like directing The A-Team, for example), but he is still credited as executive producer on Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassin’s Ball.
The actual director of this flick, unfortunately, is P.J. Pesce — the same man behind such memorable DTV flicks as Lost Boys: The Tribe and From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman’s Daughter. None of the big name original cast members are returning for this film, but Tommy Flanagan will reprise his role as Lazlo Soot, and the Tremor Brothers are back (minus Chris Pine). On top of that, the movie also stars Vinnie Jones, Tom Berenger, and… Ernie Hudson?! Alright then. Smokin’ Aces 2 hits DVD and Blu-ray on January 19, 2010. Check out the trailer after the jump.

You are correct, Smokin Aces was an absurdly dumb Guy Ritchie rip off.
Posted by Joel on October 28th, 2009You both are incorrect it was not a Guy Ritchie rip off in any way.
Posted by swarez on October 28th, 2009Smoking Aces was great time spent. Fun and exciting.
It wasn’t a Guy Ritchie rip off at all. Anyone who has seen it and still thinks so is a complete and utter moron.
Posted by Ben on October 28th, 2009Tom Berenger … the original substitute. I wonder if they’ll get Treat Williams for the 3rd one?
Posted by Ian on October 28th, 2009anyone who has seen it and thinks its a quality film and not a complete joke is the moron.
Posted by Joel on October 28th, 2009Anyone who actually gets offended by internet comments needs to priorities.
Posted by swarez on October 28th, 2009I liked the beginning of Smoking Aces with the intro of some of the characters, but it was all downhill from there and then driven 6 feet under with that horribly forced ending with with Ryan Reynolds.
Carnahan’s sense of fun by having a kid on prescription drugs and poorly executed shoot-out out of the elevator was just plain bad. His use of smoke was pretty amateur and I hope to see none of that again. Piven in a pretty embarassing role where he does a lame card trick to show he is a magician was bad.
Trying to think what I really liked about it. Common’s performance was good. Honestly, with a new director on-board it isn’t unfortunate. At least it wont try to be a 3rd rate Tarantino-type film-making. This time, the film is aware of what it is and that is straight to dvd.

Posted by jaime on October 28th, 2009It wasn’t a guy ritchie rip-off, it was just a halfbaked crap movie.
Posted by Justice on October 29th, 2009Smoking Aces isn’t a Guy Richie rip-off, it isn’t a good enough film to be that. When I think of over-the-top gun-porn scenes I don’t immediately think of Guy Richie. That is more John Woo’s mantle, usurped perhaps by a Robert Rodriguez? When I think of highly stylized-call attention to itself-technique, Gang O’ loveable thug films that have been able to build something on its own outside of the House that Tarrantino built, I think of Guy Richie. There is by comparison very little actual gunfire in his films. Swirling the camera around until you get nauseated while fifteen guys blast machine guns in small confines until all would have been deafened or asphyxiated is not what he does. “Smoking Aces,” certainly benefited from the built in audience created by better films. That is not to say I didn’t enjoy watching it for what it was and will most likely do so again, but it certainly didn’t creatively crave out any new territory.
