I suppose it's pointless to ask anymore, as just about everything is a candidate for re-boots, re-makes, re-whatever, but I'm not seeing the demand for a Dune re-do. I've never read the books or saw the first film, but the series always seemed to me to be a real gigantic, epic kind of story spanning several volumes that doesn't really translate to a single movie. Pete mentioned the complexity and density of the story with a lot of characters, history and backstory. To do it justice, it'd probably have to be done Lord of the Rings-style, but it'd probably cost too much, take too long to make, and I don't see the market out there for Dune.

Blomkamp maybe - District 9 was intersting and open minded enough. The other dude? no way- who the f*&^is he? He's done 4 films and crap ones at that. But what about the old favourites; Ridley Scott- if anything his attention to detail and godlike cinematography will preserve the film for the fanboys. Caameron maybe. Spielberg - rather not. Peter Jackson? maybe but he could well be a 1 trick pony.

I lean more towards Blomkamp because he's a sci-fi nut whether as Marshal is more of a horror guy. Plus Blomkamp visuals would blow anyone else out of the water.

I think it d be more interesting (and profitable on their end) to do it as a series...when Lynches 3hour epic came out the theatre gave you crib notes fer cryin out loud...

so you have a series with website interaction to bring people up to speed/inform...some properties are built for a mainstream franchise...some maybe too complicated...

Neil Marshall has a much better filmography as a whole but I think he's a bit more suited (at least from what we've seen) for small, more focused genre films, though I REALLY wanted him to get Predators. I'd be worried Blomkamp would be in way over his head, but I'd probably lean more towards him with a large scale scifi pic. Really either way has potentials and pitfalls.

Haven't seen Marshall's work, I guess Dune could be as epic as Lotr, giant worms and all, but Dune doesn't have as big a rabid fanbase to see the movie 10 times in theaters. I'd want to see Blomkamp directing Danny Boyle's production of Judge Dredd.
