Short Circuit Remake Gets Director of Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Let’s get one thing straight: I don’t think anyone has particularly high expectations for the upcoming remake of Short Circuit, and I don’t think anyone is kidding themselves when it comes to the quality of the original 1986 comedy. It was pure fluff, but also a memorable cultural artifact from a previous era. Now that Dimension Films have named a director for the 2011 update, however, it’s becoming painfully clear just how mediocre and pointless this thing might actually end up being.

According to Variety, Paul Blart: Mall Cop director Steve Carr has signed on to helm the new Short Circuit. Carr’s previous credits also include Dr. Doolittle 2, Daddy Day Care, and Are We Done Yet?, with not a single gem in the bunch. I know some people liked Blart, but I still can’t imagine Carr bringing any real charm to this flick. Maybe there’s still hope for the remake based on the fact that the script was written by Dan Milano (Robot Chicken), but somehow I doubt it. I think I’ll just go and cry into my corn flakes now. Does this news make you angry, sad, or just plain confused?

  1. I have seen the remake and it is called WALL-E.
Oddly enough the robot designs are close.

  2. I’ll admit that Short Circuit (especially 2) is in my top ten favorite kids movies of all time. I unabashedly love every second of both movies (especially 2).

I disagree that it’s fluff sean, quality kid’s movies are a rare breed, ESPECIALLY now…and there is a lot of philosophical pondering to be made from johnny 5’s condition.

That said. FUCK STEVE CARR AND FUCK THIS REMAKE. that is all.

  3. In regards to the remake, all I have to say is:
    Johnny Five is alive!

  4. Johnny 5 would certainly have to say something about your strong language… ;-)

Although, he would probably agree too…

  5. Remake of Short Circuit would be a bad idea, the thing is you will always relate back to the movie you saw a kid and it wont ever be the same.
Your right BigHungry also i agree that Wall E was very much like Short Circuit just a bit smaller and cuter :)

  6. Johnny 5 was alive… And now he’s dead, his robo-soul raped by to pieces by this piece of news… Yeah, I don’t think it’ll be very good.

  7. And next week’s Reboot’s are Star wars,E.t,Jaws & the Accused.
