Monday Morning Box Office Report: Saw Gets Cut Down

boxofficeoct26_09

The weekend box office results are in, and if these numbers are to be believed, it looks like there may be a changing of the guard going on. For the past few years, the Saw franchise has consistently notched $30 million, but this year its gross was cut in half by Paranormal Activity, which rode a wave of buzz to the top of the charts. Is Jigsaw’s reign finally over? Paranormal Activity’s total gross has now apparently passed the $60 million mark, most of which is pure profit. Someone’s gotta be happy about that! Where the Wild Things Are, Law Abiding Citizen and Couples Retreat rounded out the top 5, while the weekend’s other big new releases, Astro Boy and Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, both floundered with disappointing $7 million and $6.3 million debuts respectively. Meanwhile, Fox Searchlight’s Amelia just barely missed a spot the top 10.

1. Paranormal Activity — $22M
2. Saw VI — $14.8M
3. Where the Wild Things Are — $14.4M
4. Law Abiding Citizen — $12.7M
5. Couples Retreat — $11.1M
6. Astro Boy — $7.02M
7. The Stepfather — $6.5M
8. Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant — $6.35M
9. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs — $5.6M
10. Zombieland — $4.3M

  1. So happy Saw lost out the no#1 spot.

  2. If you ask me, Paranormal Activity was too overhyped. The movie was NOT creepy. At all. Period.

  3. SAW definitely flopped, it was beat by Law Abiding Citizen on both Saturday and Sunday at the Box Office.
I agree Paranormal Activity only lived up to it’s hype in the last 20 min. the rest of the movie was slow, they could have cut 45 min out of the film.

  4. So was Paranormal Activity’s “oh we are so indie, you have to demand us to come to your theater” marketing just a viral campaign? It seems that it got more word around than Saw.

  5. Being scared is obviously a subjective thing, but whenever I hear someone saying they weren’t scared at all I always have to ask… what are some movies that you do find scary? Or do you not find any movies scary? It seems like some people just can’t let themselves be immersed when it comes to any horror movie, which is a shame.

  6. Didn’t see any of the films in the top 10 this weekend. If you guys have this film showing around you, can you review Black Dynamite? It’s what I saw this weekend and I freaking loved it. 4/4

Hopefully I’ll catch Paranormal Activity soon. Everyone I know who has seen it has really enjoyed it.

  7. Oh nevermind, looks like you guys have watched it and talked about it in one your what you’ve been watching segments which ill check =)

  8. Yeah I saw what may have been a slightly early cut of Black Dynamite, and I liked it. Not a 4/4 for me, probably more like a 3/4, but still very enjoyable.

  9. @Sean, the early cut and the theatrical are not too much different, a few things tightened, the addition of “Kung Fu Bitches” and a nip/tuck here and there. Both are Damn fine comedy.

  10. I was pretty scared during PA when I was actually in the moment. However, after it was all over I was left underwhelmed. I don’t think it would hold up to multiple viewings– at least not in terms of intensity. Then again, the same could be said about Blair Witch…

  11. Uh-oh, we just got spammed.

  12. gUY’S sAW DID NOT FLOP! the film had a Bad opening but sadly the film will make it’s money back with Dvd & other’s i just hope it would be the last but we all know that’s not the case.
