As for Moore, I can’t really comment on his new film since won’t waste my money paying to see his crap, but then again I feel the same about Tarantino, so there ya go.

It’s sad because Leno is a funny guy, I’ve seen him do stand up a number of times and in the mid 90’s “The Tonight Show” was really funny. I don’t know if it’s due to censors changing, or perhaps the heads of NBC, writers leaving or whatever, but the stuff that gets put out now by Leno isn’t funny, at least not on his show (his stand up however is still very funny, maybe because there’s no censors)

The exchange of money for goods and services is something that happens in socialist or left-capitalist (if you want to call it that) countries too, you know. There’s nothing hypocritical about that at all if you ask me. Moore isn’t arguing against people making money off of things, the movie’s main argument against capitalism was clearly that it wasn’t democratic enough to his liking. Example argument: in a corporation you don’t really have any say at work over anything – for all the arguments to treat these corporations as a person and give them all these freedoms, we go to work at what are essentially dictatorships for up to half of our day. The film continues to argue that by showing an alternative of other companies where the CEOs make less and there are more opportunities and better wages for other workers. At one such company a person working on the line was making 60,000 – contrast that to airline pilots in the film who were making less than 20,000 a year.

And again, he’s working within the system, so there’s a buffer against that criticism. I know people who benefit from the tax system as it currently is, who are still against it and want it reformed. is that hypocritical? Is it hypocritical to generally dislike socialism if you enjoy the benefits of the number of publicly funded services every day? Things aren’t so simple, and you can lean from one side to the other on major issues even if you sometimes benefit from things you don’t wholeheartedly endorse.

Let’s say I rake in a bunch of money at Company X, would I not be allowed to criticize that company from within for its business practices, just because that same company made me rich? How does anything ever change or improve without people fighting from within that system? Do you think the abolitionist movement didn’t include those who would have benefited from owning slaves? When Ben Franklin joined the abolitionist movement, should people have disregarded what he had to say?

I’m not saying you have to like anything Moore says whatsoever, I simply think your premise is fatally flawed. For the record, I don’t think you have to see the movie to have arguments against a number of Moore’s ideas, however by not having seen it, you’re certainly more likely to be attacking strawmen. You are definitely setting yourself up to make a fool of yourself if you’re going to attack Moore for ideas he isn’t even presenting or arguing against. A large deal of it is an appeal for accountability, and for the public to have more say in government than lobbyists for companies ‘too big to fail’. Moore acknowledges the opportunities capitalism gave him, but at the same time hates what the system does to others enough that he feels he has to also criticize it. I don’t consider Moore’s arguments to be all that complex, but it’s nowhere near simple enough to just yell ‘Commie!’ or ‘Hypocrite!’ at either. Buying a ticket to this movie is nowhere as weird to me as when people pay for Che Guevara t-shirts, that’s for sure.
