Neil Marshall and Sam Raimi Bring Forth Burst 3D

The flurry of 3-D horror movies is quickly turning into an uncontrollable storm as we have news of yet ANOTHER well-known director headed for three-dimensional thrills this week. Variety reports that British helmer Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday) has signed on to direct a project called Burst 3D for Ghost House Pictures, which will team him with producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. Lionsgate will distribute the film worldwide.
The script, written by Gary Dauberman (Swamp Devil), follows a group of travelers who are stranded during a blizzard and find themselves being picked off by “a malevolent force that makes people spontaneously combust”. Well, at the very least the premise should make for some interesting special effects! Marshall is expected to start shooting Burst once he puts the finishing touches on his Roman war epic Centurion. As much as I am starting to feel pretty cynical about the whole 3-D overload, I can’t help but be a little excited about the thought of a Neil Marshall/Sam Raimi collaboration. Are you a fan of Marshall’s previous films? Are you more likely to see this than some of the other recently announced horror flicks being shot in 3-D?

i think the 3D technology got a bad rep from all the (bad) horror ‘remakes’ using it. with this project i’m hopeful that we’ll finally get to see the good side of 3D, since there are two good directors behind this.
Posted by Napalm on October 9th, 2009Yeah, I’m a little sick of 3d, but I will watch ANYTHING Neil Marshall does. Even a Dog Soldiers 3D remake.
Posted by Justice on October 10th, 2009Id be excited if Raimi was co-director or something, but as producer is he really going to be THAT involved? Plus i’ve never seen a Neil Marshall movie.
Posted by Drew on October 11th, 2009Haven’t seen Doomsday yet but Dog Soldiers is great and The Descent is one of my favourite movies – horror or otherwise.
Posted by Jody on October 11th, 2009Neil Marshall is a hack. His only good film is The Descent, and he stole the story from author Jeff Long – which coincidentally enough titled his 2001 novel, THE DESCENT…
3-D is here to stay. To quote some dude on the Monsters vs. Aliens special features: if the great directors, like Spielberg, Lucas and James Cameron are working in 3-D, you know it’s not just a gimmick.
Peace-out.

Are these really the great directors though?
Posted by Henrik on October 11th, 2009I don’t mean to be contrarian just to be contrarian. By the way Patrick, you lurking douchebag, I apologize. Feel free to scold me whenever I am out of line. I am curious what threads you are referring to on the podcast though, do you want to give an example? I guess since both the readers and Jay himself feel I am out of line, I will try and be less challenging. Back on subject.
I just think that if Spielberg Lucas and Cameron has ever been on the cutting edge of anything, it’s visual effects. Not storytelling or insight in the human condition. So it makes perfect sense that these guys are the ones embracing 3D.
It’s curious that Shyamalans new movie isn’t in 3D. Maybe he will come across as irrelevant when it opens, and it will be another blow to his career. I think Shyamalan is one of the best hollywood directors, and he is not doing 3D, even though he is trying to make a blockbuster phenomenon. I guess they can 3D-ify it if needed.
Are any of next summers tentpole movies in 3D? Other than animated movies, is stuff like The A-Team, Clash of the Titans etc. in 3D? I don’t think they are. There is still a chance that it will die, although it seems unlikely since the movies are making more money, even though they are selling the same number of tickets.

What the hell did I do to piss *you* off?
Posted by Patrick McShittypants on October 12th, 2009Holee fuck, goddamit it. This will teach me to use my fiancee’s e-mail address to fake troll, *then* tell her to attach a Gravatar to it. And fucking Sean is Japan, not here to correct my deep and sudden shame.
Goddamn cock balls, this is bullshit.
Posted by Dave on October 12th, 2009Hey Patrick, I was referring to the Patrick who sent in junkmail on the podcast and chewed me a new asshole.
Posted by Henrik on October 12th, 2009he made fun of you, but I don’t think he tore you (or me) a new asshole.
Where are you patrick? Wassup? if old eps get reinstated, you may be disappointed that Jay and I only had 2.5 or so big movie arguments. For your reference/pleasure – The Simpsons Movie, Clerks II and Nacho Libre. Jay over the years changed his mind about the latter, for some reason bought the Simpsons Movie, and I have no idea about Clerks II, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he owns it because he ends up owning a lot of stuff he doesn’t actually like for some reason or another. The best episode I was on was easily the Transformers 1 review, otherwise I was pretty meh at best since I was on over Skype with a bit of a lag.
Posted by Goon on October 12th, 2009I have no idea what Dave is talking about.
Posted by Goon on October 12th, 2009Lol that plot synopsis almost sounds like a parady. “Did he just explode?!” “OMG he just Burst!” “Don’t step on the cracks in the ice or you’ll burst!”
Posted by Alex on October 13th, 2009I don’t know what I’m talking about either! I sure as shit didn’t talk about it on Twitter, and I have no idea who this Patrick person is, real or imaginary.
Nope, nobody who was reading this site about 24 hours ago knows anything about anything.
