Legendary Pictures Picks Up Warren Ellis Occult Comic Gravel

Prolific and twisted comic book scribe Warren Ellis is about to see another one of his creations start the long journey to the big screen. The man behind such critically-acclaimed titles as Transmetropolitan, The Authority and Planetary will be writing and executive producing a movie based on his Avatar Press series Gravel for Legendary Pictures. He also has Red and Ocean in development at Summit and Warner Brothers respectively.

Gravel started as a mini-series but eventually became an on-going book in 2007. The story revolves around British special forces agent William Gravel who uses dark magic to fight supernatural forces and criminals of the occult. Sounds a bit like Hellboy and Hellblazer, I guess, although I haven’t read it myself so I can’t confirm that. At any rate, I guess this means there’s now a slightly better chance that a Warren Ellis project will finally make it into theatres one of these days. It’s about time!

  1. Ellis is a good writer, but we’ve all seen this kind of thing before.
    Right, Drs. Fate and Strange?

Hey, how about one (or both) of them in a movie?

  2. Drs. Fate and Strange were magicians who worked to save the world from magical threats dreamed up in the marijuana smoke thick rooms where DC and Marvel writers were paid to write four color stroke fantasies for any 12 year old boy with a nickel and inattentive parents. Bill Gravel uses magic to kill foreign dignitaries and scare off extra-dimensional entities that impregnated his old friend with lizards and syphilis (I only wish I was joking about that).
