Kurtzman and Orci Board Hawaii Five-O Remake

From Transformers, Star Trek and Fringe to… Hawaii Five-O? Sure, why not! It was confirmed this week that writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will not be returning to help write Transformers 3 for Michael Bay. Instead, it appears that they will be turning their attention to a remake of the classic ’70s cop series Hawaii Five-O for CBS. Sounds like they’re trading up to me.

Variety reports that Kurtzman and Orci will oversee the scripting of the pilot by Peter Lenkov, who also executive produces CSI: NY and previously wrote screenplays for such films as Demolition Man and Son in Law. If the show gets picked up, Lenkov would serve as the series showrunner. Another Hawaii Five-O remake was first announced last year with Ed Bernero (Criminal Minds) on board as the writer. At the time, it was hinted that the new show would revolve around Chris McGarrett, son of original Five-O cop Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord). It’s unclear if this is still the premise they are going with, but I have only one request: can we please get Gary Busey in the lead role? He starred in an unsold pilot for a Hawaii Five-O remake that never happened back in the late ’90s. Now that’s a show I’d watch!

  1. Great, “…previously wrote screenplays for such films as Demolition Man and Son in Law.”…I’m not sure that, that’s a selling point in my book.

  2. this was probably my all time favorite show. as to gary busey i say “book him, danno!”

  3. Another interesting Star Trek connection is that Jack Lord was one of the actors considered for the role of Captain Kirk in the ’60s! With the walkie-talkie antenna removed from the above photo, I can imagine McGarrett saying, “Beam me up, Scottio.”

  4. they should rename it H5O..with Busey as a likeable Bounty Hunter…like Dog only not as helpful…

  5. H50! That’s brilliant, Pete!

  6. Dye David Caruso’s hair dark brown, and you have Jack Lord!

  7. Best show ever! Started on my b-day. Bee die hard fan since I was old enough to watch. Remake would great if right people were cast. Not Gary Buesy to much brain damage and drug use.
