Zombieland Sequel Being Considered

Not surprisingly, after the great opening weekend of the Woody Harrelson starring zom-com flick Zombieland, where the movie both conquered the number one spot at the box office and more than made back its budget ($25 million on a $23 million budget), a sequel is being considered. So says one of the films writers, Paul Wernick, who would love to return to the post-apocalyptic universe created within the film:
“We would love it, and everyone involved creatively wants to do another one. Woody [Harrelson] came up to us after the final cut of the last scene and gave us a hug and said, ‘I’ve never wanted to do a sequel in the previous movies I’ve done until this one.’”
So if one of the writers is ready, presumably the rest of the team is too and even Harrelson is up for a sequel. I guess that puts the odds of one happening pretty high, especially if the movie continues to do well at the box office. However, if that isn’t the case and no movie comes, or for some other reason the studio doesn’t want to make a sequel, Wernick would also love to see the concept continued as a TV series, as the movie’s script was actually originally made as a spec TV pilot back in 2005. Seeing as I’m not American, I have yet to see the movie, so I can’t say if a sequel would be a good idea or not. What do you think, is Zombieland worthy of a sequel or spin-off in the same universe?

Posted by Mike on October 8th, 2009Really enjoyed the film. A sequel by the same team could be intresting, but im not really sure where they could take it. Minus the fact we have no idea where they’re going next, the story wraps up pretty nicely at the Carnival.
Posted by Ben on October 9th, 2009Loved Zombieland, hope they make a sequel. The movie has to do a lot more than $25 million to break even. You have distribution and exhibitor splits first in line for the revenues generated. Rule of thumb is about 50% going these groups for any movie. Zombieland would need to be in the $46+ million neighborhood before it breaks even.
Posted by Bret on October 9th, 2009The best zombie movie by far! Zombieland similarly resembled the left 4 dead series where the zombies were not handicapped by speed making it way more realistic. Absolutely loved it and I can’t wait for a sequel! I’m waiting for news so that I can possibly go in for the sequel casting call as an extra.

Posted by ben on November 29th, 2009DVD sales are much more important than box office. The companies that produce the movies only make a % of Box Office Revenue, they make MUCH more on DVD sales. This is amazing film, I plan on buying the dvd, like many others, no doubt.
Directors and filmmakers just have to make money on dvd, box office is only a small piece of the pie. Just think of the potential sales – with extras – deleted scenes, potential zombieland games on dvd. If the DVD has any effort put into making it – it will make some serious bank.
If you look at filmmakers like Kevin Smith – they have careers because of DVD. Family Guy, Futurama were brought back due to dvd sales.
Posted by Marc on December 8th, 2009I could live without the 3D. Too often, it’s merely a gimmick to have something leap out at you and go “BOOGA-BOOGA-BOOGA!” Notable exception was “Avatar,” which, for all its flaws as a story, made truly lovely use of 3D not to jump out, but to gently *recede* and create immersive depth (far more depth than the script, as it happens).
As for a Z-Land sequel…
OK, so here’s how I see it. In the sequel, the troupe stops in Columbus, OH after all (where else do they have to go?). Once there, they discover that Columbus’ parents (â€Paranoid shut-ins,†remember?) are not only still alive, but have carved out a fortress-like enclave of fiercely disciplined but VERY eccentric survivors. Columbus gets to introduce Wichita/Krista to the ‘rents after all. Hilarity ensues.
Oh, and as for Tallahasse? Remember how evasive he was at answering the whole “laying pipe†question himself? How appalled he was at the notion that Columbus wanted to go Heels-to-Jesus with Wichita? The lack of mention of poor Buck’s mother?
Tallahasse just might be gay. Interesting, yes? Can anyone say Neil Patrick Harris?
Kind of a limited shelf life for the franchise, though; these zombies are VERY sick, not (apparently…) breeding, and rapidly running out of fresh humans to nosh on. Really is just a matter of waiting them out.
And did *anyone* think of using a CB radio?! (“Breaker-breaker: NOT a zombie, here, c’mon back!”) And is anyone alive at the power generation plants (where’s all that electricity coming from? Pretty good security at nuke facilities…)
