Should a Mystique Spin-Off be the Next X-Men Movie?

Rebecca Romijn, the former wife of John Stamos… what a lovely lady. Ever since her turn as Mystique in the first three X-Men films, she has mostly been doing TV, appearing in such shows as Ugly Betty and the new ABC series Eastwick. She has only actually appeared in one movie since X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006 (the forgettable Lake City), but apparently Romijn would like to do more movies. Specifically X-Men movies. Yes, the 5′ 11″ blonde would be interested in reprising her role as the red-haired, shape-shifting mutant that kick-started her acting career. But it would have to wait a bit though… she needs to lose some weight first.
Back when the announcement of X-Men Origins: Wolverine came and there was talk of other spin-offs such as movies about Storm and Magneto, one of the characters that fans wanted to see in her own movie was Mystique. Although Fox didn’t pay attention and instead set out to make X-Men: First Class, Romijn hears ya, so make some noise people! When asked if she would reprise her role as Mystique, she replied that she is ready for it, just as soon as she gets back into shape after having given birth to twins not too long ago.
“If they talk to me in a year when I have worked off more of the baby weight, we’ll see, but I’ve still got a couple of pounds to go. It’s a great idea but no one has talked to me about it yet.”
So at least that’s half the distance, right? Or maybe not. But at least she’s ready for another go, so we’ll just need to get Fox to realize that a Mystique flick is the route that they should steer towards, not First Class. So fans, get your keyboards ready, open a new mail, and harass Fox until they cave. GO!

Hell yes, bring it on. After all, Wolverine was such a massive critical and commercial success wasn’t it? We all loved that didn’t we? If it’s half as good as that we’ll be happy won’t we?
Hello?

Posted by kris on October 7th, 2009Let me play Devil’s Advocate for a moment. Let’s instead harass Fox to stop making mutant movies altogether, so that the film rights revert back to Marvel/Disney. Sure, it’s less realistic, but then we might be able to see something like a live-action Hulk vs. Wolverine movie.
Posted by Arrogance on October 7th, 2009No one has as good of a back-story as Wolvie. This would fail in every way.

Posted by pcch7 on October 8th, 2009I beg to differ with Ryan M. Mystique actually has one of the more interesting backstories…She is Nightcrawler’s mother, a backstory they chose not to use when they made X-Men United. And in the comics I believe she raised Rogue as well. But even if they decide these backstories are not in the canon they’ve established in the X-Men movies, there is so much they could do with the character. At the very least, I think she should be present in the Magneto film, with more history revealed about her than was given in the X-Men movies.
Posted by MelS on October 13th, 2009I definately would love to see a movie about mystique cause even if she is nightcrawlers mother she is still have a far more interesting story then they show it in x-men. She had something with Professor Xavier and Magneto and she always got betrayed and the way she survived and used people to get there in her point of perspective and how vindictive and seductive she would be to turn it into her own ways make her the perfect villain that we all love to see and make her do her crazy stunts to kick her opponents and leave some clues behind to show her intelligence and to mock with her opponent cause she know she is that good and very tricky it would be very entertaining.
