Cla$$war Comic Optioned for the Big Screen

Although Surrogates still hasn’t come close to making back its $80 million budget, that hasn’t stopped Mandeville Films from moving forward on a couple of other comic book movies. According to MTV, late last week they picked up the rights to Cla$$war, a comic book by Rob Williams, Trevor Hairsine and Travel Foreman from indie publisher Com.x. The comic is a 6-issue mini-series that ran between 2002 and 2004, and was voted Best Independent Superhero Comic of 2003 by Wizard Magazine readers.

The story revolves around a superhero known as The American who finds out a dark secret about the U.S. government that makes him realize that he’s fighting for the wrong side. He ends up trying to bring the truth to the people, and must face off against the rest of his genetically-enhanced team of super soldiers in order to do it. Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman (Surrogates, Traitor, Beverly Hills Chihuahua) will produce. They are also developing a film based on Top Cow’s Alibi and are currently producing David O. Russell’s The Fighter. Has anyone out there read either of these comics? Do they deserve to be adapted for the big screen?

  1. I started to read it but lost track because of the erratic release schedule of the issues (6 issues over 2 years?) Trevor Hairsine was the draw for me, he’s a great illustrator. Maybe I’ll seek out the final issues since you reminded me of Classwar’s existence. To answer your question, yes a movie could be cool but probably not if these guys make it.

  2. A movie about hating America. Sounds like Michael Moore might get behind this movie. ZING!

  3. I vote against the zing.
