George A. Romero to Write a Zombie Novel

With zombies being such a hot commodity on the big screen over the last few years, they’ve also been making the transition to just about every medium possible including comics, video games and books. In fact, the publishing world has arguably become even more infatuated with the undead than the movie world as of late, with horror readers looking for alternatives to the recent flood of vampire-related fiction. The success of Seth Grahame-Smith’s mash-up novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is just one indication of how much demand is out there for zombies on the page.

As such, it was only a matter of time before someone recruited zombie master George A. Romero to attach his name to a book as well. According to The Guardian, Romero has just landed a lucrative deal with UK publisher Headline to write his very first novel. The book will be called simply The Living Dead, and is expected to be a definitive look at “the full story behind the living dead: how they came to be [and] what they can and cannot do”. Romero is rumoured to have been paid a sweet $300,000 advance for this book and a sequel… not too shabby! Maybe it’s time for George to give up directing and become a full-time novelist. The only question is, can he actually write? Look for The Living Dead to hit stores by next July.

  1. That’s right– because the WRITING has always been the strongest part of Romero’s skill-set.

    Jesus.

  2. “The only question is, can he actually write?” Good question ! In any case, it takes advantage.

  3. I have the novelization of “Dawn of the Dead” which I think was co-written by Romero.

  4. And… is it good? Better than the movie? ;)

  5. I don’t remember, I read it in the mid ’90’s. I’ll have to re-read it. Along with his new novels, he should do a zombie handbook like the Zombie Survival Guide. After all, he’s the guy who created a lot of the rules for zombies.

  6. If anything it’ll be an interesting read (That doesn’t mean good) cause it seems like the man always has a ton of ideas and themes and messages going into his hour and half movie. Maybe in a 300 page book it’ll all flow a little bit better then the last two films (or maybe it’ll be terrible, either way, I’ll pick it up)
