Thomas The Tank Engine Gets a New Movie

Hey look… someone found a kid’s brand that hasn’t been turned into a movie in almost 10 years! British TV series Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends is coming back to the big screen courtesy of HiT Entertainment. The popular children’s show has been around since the ’80s and was based on The Railway Series of books by Rev. W. Awdry. The TV series was crudely animated with moving model trains that had static faces on them (which I always found sort of creepy) and occasional stop motion animation, but this will be a mix of live action and CGI.
Some may remember that Ringo Starr narrated the original U.K. version of the TV series, while Alec Baldwin narrated a later U.S. version and played Mr. Conductor in the previous 2000 feature film Thomas and the Magic Railroad. Neither will be involved in this movie, but Josh Klausner (Shrek the Third) has been hired to write the script. The movie is slated for a spring 2011 release. I can’t say this is particularly exciting news, but one can only hope that this means some of HiT’s other properties including Pingu and Bob the Builder will be getting live action movie adaptations as well!

slow news day? George Carlin also narrated the show.

And Mary Jo Eustace (who’s hot when she’s not pregnant on the show), has that edge like Jay. It’s like Film Junk in the kitchen. Or more like Cantankerous in the kitchen. Plus, any news on Brent Butt’s new series?
Posted by paulm on September 30th, 2009When I was in my mid teens, I had a job babysitting two adorable but trouble making little boys. They loved to get themselves into all sorts of problems. One morning, I arrived before their dad left and he had just shown them a video tape of a compilation of Thomas episodes and they were mesmerized. He told me that I could put that tape in, press play and regardless of what they were up to, they’d stop and watch. I spent an entire summer getting to know Thomas. I fucking hate that show.
