Star Wars: Uncut Fan Remake Trailer

If you have not yet heard about the “crowdsourcing” craze, you might want to familiarize yourself with it, because you’re going to be hearing about it a lot more in the near future. Crowdsourcing involves focusing the skills and resources of a large group of people on a single task, usually via the internet, in order to create something potentially bigger and much more efficient than would otherwise be possible. Although it’s an ideal way to amass knowledge and solve problems, the concept has spilled over into the creative realm as well, where people are collaborating on everything from books to music to movies.
One of the biggest examples of collaboration in the realm of cinema thus far is the on-going fan remake Star Wars: Uncut, a project being cultivated by Vimeo employee Casey Pugh where the original Star Wars movie is recreated by hundreds of people in 15 second segment chunks. The resulting remake will obviously be a patchwork of conflicting styles and personalities, and while on the one hand it could turn out to be a complete mess, it could also be a charming and hilarious work of art with the same lo-fi feel as Michel Gondry’s sweded remakes in Be Kind Rewind. I don’t have much love for fan films, but I have to admit, this is a pretty unique concept. The newly released trailer (embedded after the jump) gives an idea of just how eclectic and unpredictable the final product will be. What do you think? While the film itself is wholly un-enjoyable as an entertainment piece, it may find traction in the medical and/or military fields for the ability to induce epileptic seizures upon viewing.
Posted by Shut-Up Ed on September 29th, 2009Looks pretty messy (expected ofcourse), but I can definitely see the idea improving over the years.
On the topic of fan films, has anybody checked out the Lord of the Rings fan film: Hunt For Gollum?
Posted by Napalm on September 29th, 2009This idea would work much better I think if each fan took one scene, not some arbitrary time, so that styles change mid-scene.
Posted by Deven Science on September 29th, 2009I agree with Deven. Fifteen seconds? Why?
I still laughed though. It looks like fun.
Posted by Falsk on September 29th, 2009I agree, looks like fun, might be a bit much to digest in one sitting though
Posted by Ray on September 30th, 2009I don’t think that this has the artistic merit of something like Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated. This just seems like a bunch of yahoos with cameras filming their nerdiness. And where I’m not too far removed from that group, I think that this project could have been approached differently to make it more worthwhile for the artistic and film communities, respectively.
Posted by Marcus on October 1st, 2009I have to admit I laughed seeing The Big Lebowski in there.
Posted by Glendon on October 1st, 2009Fans films can be fun and in some cases, pretty well made. This is the flip side of that – complete shit shot by nerds with video cameras for nothing more than the purpose of self gratification. What a load of bollocks.
Posted by Shinobi Genbukan on October 2nd, 2009I thought the Trek fan films were very good, trumping alot of TNG’s episodes, so not all fan films are bad.
Posted by RS232 on October 2nd, 2009This looks ok, certainly not as bad as fan fiction, they have to follow the screenplay, so they can only visually mess stuff up.
What else can one say except “Star Wars Rocks!”.
Posted by Tommy on October 2nd, 2009If you actually read into it, the guys that’s organizing it is going to overlay the original soundtrack, so it could actually work.
