Coens Not Interested In Big Lebowski Spin-Off But Maybe Barton Fink Sequel?

To those who have been craving a second helping of The Big Lebowski or the proposed spin-off about John Turturro’s character, the pedophile bowler Jesus Quintana, all hope is lost. The Coen Brothers have been doing the press rounds for their latest flick A Serious Man, and when talking to MTV they were asked about the possibilities of a sequel, to which they replied: “We don’t see it. That movie [The Big Lebowski] has more of an enduring fascination for other people than it does for us.” So not only are they not interested in a sequel, but they aren’t really into The Big Lebowski as much as their fans are. Ouch, two blows in one go.
While this is indeed sad news for Lebowski and John Turturro fans, it isn’t all bad for Turturro-ites, as The Coens aren’t against doing sequels per se, but they just aren’t into doing one for The Big Lebowski. The two filmmakers are actually interested in doing a sequel to one of their other features, the 1991 film Barton Fink, which also starred Turturro as the title character. The sequel would revolve around “Old Fink”, again being played by Turturro, but the movie wouldn’t be made until they think he is old enough to play the part. When that will be, no one knows; The Coens would only say that he was “getting there”.
While The Big Lebowski is awesome, I am still kind of glad that it won’t be getting a sequel, prequel, spin-off or what not. I think it’s a work that stands fine on its own. It’s a story that feels concluded, so I am glad that it’ll stay that way. However I haven’t actually seen Barton Fink, so I can’t say if that excites me or not, but Turturro is a talented guy and I have been hoping to be able to check the movie out sometime, so having The Coens consider a sequel following him as an old man can’t be all bad, can it? What about you, would you like to see a sequel to Barton Fink, or would you much rather see the universe of “The Dude” expanded further?

what needs to be seen is another installment of Miller’s Crossing!
I agree with the Coens; The Big Lebowski love is way over the top and not even close to there best work.
Posted by rus in chicago on September 23rd, 2009Could another Miller’s Crossing help explain the first one to me? I haven’t seen it since the theatre, but I remember being thoroughly confused.
Posted by Greg on September 23rd, 2009I agree it is a film you need to see a couple of times to fully appreciate. My initial confusion was paired with the desire to figure out all of the backstabbing scenarios.
I think of all the Coens films, Millers Crossing is one of the few set-up for a sequel. The time period after prohibition…does Gabriel Byrne’s character (Tom Regan) take over one of the mobs?

Posted by Shut-Up Ed on September 23rd, 2009This excites me to no end. Barton Fink is my favourite Coen Brothers movie.
At first, I thought it wouldn’t be a good idea to do a sequel due to how abstract and surreal the ending is. But an old Fink… I really see how that could work. It would be a whole new chapter of his life, and it would be a new era. Who knows if he would even still be a writer.
Posted by Senor G on September 23rd, 2009Barton Fink is one of the best movie about Hollywood, though I don’t think the sequel would be a good idea since the ending is pitch perfect for the original.
