Greg’s 2009 TIFF Report: Day 6

It has became a bit of a tradition for me to completely blow off a screening at least once a year. Last year, it was the 4 hour Che. Well, I didn’t disappoint myself and when I woke up Thursday morning, I decided that it was time. So, see you later Kamui. It pained me to ditch a ninja movie, but after 11 movies and 2 wrestling events in 6 days, I was a mess. Physically and mentally.
I pulled myself together eventually and headed downtown for a 3:30pm screening at about 3:10pm. This was not looking good. After having to change subway lines I decided to take a cab the rest of the way. I would have made the screening right on time had I not given up my cab to the attractive blonde woman who asked if she could have the cab. I believe I responded with “muhlrahr“. She assumed that meant ‘okay’ and took the cab. Oh, shut your stupid face. I know what you’re thinking. Come on, it was the gentlemanly thing to do.
The movie is just starting and I sit down to watch the next action movie from Hong Kong director Johnnie To. It’s called Vengeance and it is what I like to refer to as a bullet ballet. Stylistic action films. Gold. Check out the review here.
I meet up with my old friend Mel and her roommate joins us for a trek down to the Air Canada Centre to check out a performance of Toronto rockers Die Mannequin and their guest Marilyn Manson. As a side note, we grabbed dinner at Swiss Chalet and I spilled nothing on my shirt. Victory! Die Mannequin was good, but I have to say that the crowd for Manson was weak. Their weren’t a lot of people because of the following reasons. U2 was playing next door, Manson did zero press for his new album and tour, and it’s possible that he might be irrelevant. I’m glad I didn’t pay for the tickets, but I have to say I was disappointed in the atmosphere.
A screening of Drew Barrymore’s Whip It on Friday and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats take on the Calgary Stampeders. Oskee-wee-wee.
