Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page and Liv Tyler to Star in James Gunn’s Superhero Comedy

Oh great, just what we need… another superhero comedy. I probably would have brushed right by this next bit of news if not for the fact that it happens to be written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The movie is called Super and it is about a normal man who decides to become a superhero named Crimson Bolt, in order to win back his wife from the clutches of a “charming drug dealer”. Since he doesn’t actually have any super powers, he kicks ass using a wrench. Hasn’t this idea been done to death already?

Rainn Wilson has signed on to play Crimson Bolt, which frankly, doesn’t have me all that excited either. His first full starring vehicle The Rocker looked pretty terrible, and bombed at the box office. Liv Tyler will play his wife, while Ellen Page, on the other hand, is now confirmed to be playing Crimson Bolt’s sidekick, “a psychopathic teen who works in a comic book store”. Wilson previously appeared on screen with Ellen Page in Juno, and also had a role in the Uma Thurman/Luke Wilson cape comedy My Super Ex Girlfriend.

This genre has become increasingly crowded over the past few years with such entries as Superhero Movie, Super Capers, the British TV series No Heroics, and now the Woody Harrelson film Defendor. The one thing that gives me hope is the fact that James Gunn did an indie superhero comedy back when the concept was still fresh called The Specials. I was a big fan of Slither as well, and hope that he can bring something new to the table. What do you think, does this movie have potential, or will it be just as forgettable as all the rest? Super starts production this December.

  1. This might not be too bad. Gunn’s work on The Specials shows that he has a love for the genre, so that helps. Wilson’s an odd choice, but this one might squeak by as “OK.”

  2. So sick of ellen page and her BULLSHIT!

  3. There have been some fairly good super hero parodies over the years: I liked Mystery Men, which, despite a stellar cast and other qualities came and went w/o a ripple.
I also thought Sky High was at least watchable.

Believe it or not, there is also an element of parody to Watchmen.

  4. This actually sounds somewhat similar to “Kickass.” Although that’s based on a comic book written by the same guy who did “Wanted”

  5. The talented Page —sadly, already becoming routine
    and PC ‘outrageous’.
