Harmony Korine’s Trash Humpers Trailer

There are a lot of weird filmmakers out there in the world, but there is only one Harmony Korine. After getting his start as the writer of Larry Clark’s Kids, he went on to direct his first feature-length film Gummo, and from there has continued to shock and confuse audiences with his aggressively anti-mainstream projects. He would be an easy guy to write off if he wasn’t so good at capturing striking imagery and exploring strange subcultures. I don’t always love his movies, but at least you know you can count on them offering something out of the ordinary.
His latest film Trash Humpers premieres at the Toronto Film Festival this weekend, and I think the lo-fi trailer for said film can easily be summed up with a simple… WTF? The movie apparently follows a group of elderly people (read: actors wearing old man make-up a la Jackass) who vandalize and terrorize everything around them. It is also partially a musical… go figure. Yes, it’s going to be an interesting year at TIFF, that’s for sure. Check out the trailer for Trash Humpers after the jump.

I like the VHS effect/look to the trailer a lot. Other than that I’m intrigued and a little creeped out.
Posted by modesilver on September 10th, 2009anyone see lars von trier’s “the idiots” ?
Posted by blackmothra on September 10th, 2009Im all for “new” things but this just looks like one of those films you watch in film school that the teacher just loves and leaves you utterly confused. Maybe it’s anti mainstream but there are reasons why films are mainstream: they’re good.
Posted by cavecreaturefilms on September 10th, 2009Jesus…I’ve seen and actually “liked” some of Korine’s other movies, but this looks decidedly pretentious. I think that he’s been doing a LOT of substance abusing as well as hanging around Von Trier, Herzog and the like. All of their aesthetics seem to have rubbed off but none of their depth or meaning. cavecreaturefilms is probably right about the film school reference. On the other hand:
“Maybe it’s anti mainstream but there are reasons why films are mainstream: they’re good.”
THAT is a wrong statement in all kinds of ways.

Posted by buluga whale on September 10th, 2009A bunch of crap. Looks like something an 8 year old could direct.
Posted by Derek on September 11th, 2009Man, thats 47 seconds of my life I wont ever get back. Complete load of bullshit!
Posted by MalD on September 14th, 2009Looks interesting. Looks unlike anything I’ve seen, and that’s a hard thing to accomplish nowadays.
Look at all you sad geeks pining away for your Star Trek sequels. The reason films are mainstream is because they are at the same level as the audience: MEDIOCRE.
Get it right.
Posted by waterblack on October 2nd, 2009Often people dislike this work, and enjoy disliking it. On the other hand, excusing the work coming right before this one (part of taking chances is making mistakes), a strength has been developed in the body of work that is Harmony Korine’s output of the last two decades. I don’t shoot dope, nor have I. Who gives a fuck what’s up with the artist producing work and what they are doing to get by. Taking a closer look at his features, clean, loaded or whatever, a real artistic integrity exists. Talking shit is naturalistic, a non-mysterious impulse. On viewing the work of this artist, not mysteriously, people react in direct and vocal ways. There is more than just something to be be said for that impulse.
