Children of the Corn Remake Coming To A Theater Near You!

Remake supporters rejoice! Another old horror franchise is getting remade, oh joy! This time around it’s Children of the Corn that’s up for a new interpretation, which isn’t really news at all since there has actually been one in the works for the past couple of years, but without it really getting anywhere. Apparently Dimension Films wants that to change now and has put their trust in the brand by bumping the movie up from previously being made as a direct-to-DVD flick, to now becoming a full-fledged theatrical feature.
Aside from the theater upgrade the movie has also got a writer attached, and a prominent one at that. None other than The Ring screenwriter Ehren Kruger will adapt the new movie which is apparently being fast tracked as The Weinstein Company’s Bob Weinstein mentions that the movie will soon be heading to theaters.
“We felt the 1984 film was a missed opportunity. If you read the short story, it’s got such a strong feeling to it and there’s this religious overtone to it as well. Ehren wants to hit it hard. It’s popular in Hollywood to say you’re re-envisioning a project but a lot of the time they’re just carbon copying the original. We are bringing something new to the story.”
A re-envisioning huh? The same old bullshit, just in a different package. Instead of just doing the textbook claim that they are re-envisioning things, Weinstein is doing a turnover on all the other hacks and claiming that they never truly re-envision anything (which is, of course, true) but that Kruger actually will. You are a clever man Weinstein, but I don’t trust you one bit. This will most likely be yet another crappy remake made in 3D to “enhance” the experience. What do you think, are you looking forward to a reboot of the franchise or should it be left out in the fields where it belongs?

I’ll agree with Weinstein that the original “Children of the Corn” was a missed opportunity. That film really does nothing for me despite the interesting premise.
I also enjoyed Kruger’s take on “Ringu” so I think it’s fair to say I have some optimism, however reserved, for this project. Sign an interesting director and I’m sold.
Posted by Colin on September 8th, 2009God we need this,i’m all for a good remake.
Posted by Machete on September 8th, 2009I’m excited about this! Not so excited about the SyFy (or however you abbreviate it now) remake supposedly airing this weekend (26th @ 9?), but the theatrical release should be interesting. This movie scared me to death when I was little (probably b/c our house was surrounded by cornfields)…
