Paul W.S. Anderson to Direct The Three Musketeers

With all the swashbuckling adventure movies that have been getting greenlit as of late, it appears that everyone’s favourite mindless action director Paul W.S. Anderson has decided to throw his hat into the ring as well by heading up a new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s The Three Musketeers. THR’s Heat Vision blog reports that he is developing a script with Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’s Diary, Brideshead Revisited), and like every other upcoming blockbuster, the movie will be shot in 3-D. Seems like it won’t be long before 3-D is a requirement for a studio to even consider making a movie.
Anderson says he plans to modernize the story, while also making it a period piece; I guess it might be something like Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes in that regard. Don’t worry though, he insists that “corsets and feathered hats don’t take center stage”, and the movie will still contain plenty of “eye-popping action, romance and adventure”. One of the more recent adaptations of The Three Musketeers was Disney’s 1993 film starring Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland and Oliver Platt. Can Paul W.S. Anderson hope to top that when all he knows are video game adaptations and sci-fi flicks?

That’s not the most recent adaptation. The most recent would be ‘The Musketeer’ from 2001.

Posted by Sean on September 2nd, 2009I love The Four Musketeers with Lee and Heston and Welch and Dunaway etc. And I love the Gene Kelly version.
Not excited for this.
Posted by Henrik on September 2nd, 2009What about Man in the Iron Mask? It was 1998.
Posted by Mike on September 2nd, 2009Actually Man in the Iron Mask was tolerable. Malkovich was cool, so was DiCaprio as the evil man. Some bad writing and action though, the story is quite cool though, they should redo that one instead.
Posted by Henrik on September 2nd, 2009If PWSA casts his wife Milla Jovovich in the movie and puts her in a corset I might be interested.
Posted by Maopheus on September 2nd, 2009Man in the Iron Mask was my favorite Musketeers movie. The action wasn’t that bad, they were supposed to be old men.

That’s ok. I WISH I could forget that one.
Posted by Slushie Man on September 2nd, 2009I suppose the casting is most important with the 3M. The Man In The Iron Mask was pretty good with that, but they could go with solid character guys for the Four because they had Leo for sex appeal. The Sutherland/Sheen/Platt/Chris O’Donnell one was quite obviously a Brat Pack cash-in attempt. It can’t be like that with this one, although one suspects that it will be. The action will be kinda eh, typical sword fights and what not, and the historical accuracy will be nil, but then again the original story wasn’t all that accurate to begin with.
